Krikits 20H build thread

Ok here we go. All input is appreciated.

I've got 2 20H's. Crap hand me down lighting for now. My intentions are FOWLR until I get established and more comfortable w/ what's goin on in there. I just drilled the hole for a glass-holes 300gph over flow and siliconed the middle baffle for my sump/fuge. My plumbing will all be 1". Return pump is a Sen 500GA. I've got one PH, a Hydor koralia 425 gph. Light for now is just florescent. Testing will be done with API's saltwater master kit.

I'm definitely gonna be gettin an RODI and an ATO. I have a buddy that's goin to give me some rubble and water from his 220 FOWLR.

Considering the blanket of snow we got at the moment here in NOVA I figured the tub was the best place to drill. Lol might be a qualifier for "ghetto".

It looks like you off to a good start. Make sure to get yourself a nice notepad of download an app or whatever and keep track of all the testing you do. It has really helped me. Good luck and Happy Reefing.

Yep. Thanks to Admiral Rickover and his Nuclear Navy I've learned to document EVERYTHING. Lol. That might be why I'm so interested. I've spent most of my career under the sea not being able to see what's down there. So I guess I'll bring it to me. :-)

Ok. Update time. Sump/fuge is drying. Got both holes drilled and in process of dry fitting the plumbing. Went through the agony of the 1" loc-line learning curve lol. Below is what I got so far. Question though, how far into the water do I want my overflow pipe to the sump to be?

Been a while but here's my status. All plumbed up got FW in there just for leak and silencing check. I got 5-6 lbs or LR rubble and 4 gl of established SW from a buddies tank. Hopefully I'll get my cycle started this week.

He also gave me a Red Sea Berlin skimmer. Just the skimmer though. Anybody got a recommendation for a pump for it?

Ok. Here's what I got so far. Day 6 of cycle. I think all is goin well. I'm using the API test kit. A pic of my log is below. I bumped the salinity up to 1.024 after the test yesterday. The ph is low at 8 but is that too low for the cycle? Recommendations would be appreciated. All water is RODI from my LFS and mixed myself.

Ammo and nitrites 0! 50% water change done. Diatoms and coralline growin. CUC added monday 14APR14:

5 Margarita
3 Nerite
3 Astrea
3 Mexican turbo
2 tiger conch

All were suggested by my LFS Quantum reefs in Springfield VA. Everything ive researched has been pretty spot on in regard to the answers i've gotten from them.

Im planning on corals mainly but that'll be a while down the road after lights and my skimmer installed and figured out.

Live stock plan so far is:


Pistol shrimp/yellow watchman goby (do I need more sand? I have full eggcrate on the bottom.)

Lesser aggressive/territorial clown

Maybe one or 2 more. Not sure what yet.

Well it's been just over a year now and I figured I'd update this. Lol.

Got things dialed in nicely IMO. Put an oceanrevive t247 over. And a cheap German skimmer in but it's working well.

Nope. The Navy is relocating me back to CT in the next 6 months. When I upgrade I'm going big. I already have a house there and a perfect plan for a fish room and a 300 built in. Go big or go home right? Lol

Same sump as on my 20. Just added a bigger return pump and a Reef Octopus 1000SSS skimmer.
