Sorry about the quality of the picture. The 'thing' in question came attached to some live rock. It is a white blob which looks almost like a large clump of glue. It has never moved position, but its single 'tentacle' is growing in lengh at a fairly rapid rate.

The tentacle throws me off. I am inclined to think sponge but I've never heard of one with a tentacle..

Any chance of getting a picture under the white lights instead of just the blues?

it's sponge. definitely. i see that variety quite often in tanks-you'll get them branching up like that all the way to the water's surface.

while the growth is tentacle shaped, it's not a 'tentacle' like a coral's or anemone's tentacle is a 'tentacle'.

cut off a piece and you'll see ;)

Cool thanks, so totally harmless and I can happily trim it back then?

While I'm here, can I maybe also gt an ID for something a bit easier. I guess its some form of algae but it forms in a cool 'DNA'-like pattern and is a piece of cake to remove.

yeah that's a macroalgae-i forget the common name atm-it can break off and spread like wildfire everywhere-i'd remove it. it'll form bushy clumps that look like small branching flattened antlers. not too bad looking, but easily gets out of hand if your nutrient level is adequate.
