I recently upgrade my tank to a 150 and its been years since I have had to cycle a tank. Went through the "normal" cycle and diatom bloom but after the bloom, I started to get green almost slime algae blooms. Water is crystal clear all night and about the first 2 hours of the day. Then bloom clarity gets really bad can barely see the back of the tank, and then about 4-5 in the afternoon starts to clear up again and will go back to crystal clear for the last 2-3 hours of light.

I am skimming pretty wet have added extra carbon, and am doing 20% water changes every 5-7 days. I have a handful of fish in the tank already (about 5 weeks after original setup) and all seem happy and not affected by the bloom.

Current stock is 3 chromis, diamond goby, firefish, 2 anthias

ideas on cause or suggestions???

Were these fish added all at once? How much do you feed. What does your skim mate look like beside wet? does it smell?

I would want to start drying the skim mate up a bit and really getting the extra nutrients out of the tank, to where the skim mate is thick.

What type of lighting and how old is it? That can play around with blooms as well. Any corals yet or just fish and rock? or just fish?

Did you test phosphate and nitrate?

Can you syphon out this with a hose?

The fish bioload in this tank is low.

I have 3 AI sol blues on the tank, and for now I have live sand BRS rock and the fish. No corals, or inverts. Also running a MAG18 for a return with 2 MP 40s for circulation.

Yes all the fish were added at the same time. I have tested a couple of times and phospates did not show up in and the nitrates were very low between 0 and 5

As for the feeding I have been feeding 2x a day about 1/2 to 3/4 cub per feeding over a period of 3-4 minutes. Add food wait for fish to eat whats there and then feed some more.

I bet its from the frozen food you use. I used to have the same issue. I did this to correct it. Grab a cup and add some tank water to it and drop in the frozen food. Let the food thaw. Strain the food out with a fine net and then add to the tank. I bet your clarity issues and water parameter issue will go away.

Ok, I will give this a try.
