View Full Version : Protein skimmer 500g

I'm hoping you can help me choosing a skimmer for my new reef. It's a 425g display with sump, quarantine and frag tank, aprox 500 to 550 total water volume. I was thinking in a deltec 3070 internal or bbking supermarin 300.
My goal is to maintain sps, some lps, and a heavy fish load.

Vertex alpha 300?

Seems like your sump may be a bit small as well if your Total water volume is only 500-550 with all of the extras on it??

Bubbleking over the Deltec

Well benihana, you're right, the sump alone will be at least 120g, althought it's not defined yet, maybe a little bigger. With the other extras, probably more like 600+... And a vertex 300 would do the job, for less $$.

Azjohnny, I was thinking bbking in the first place, but a lfs told me that he has several bbkings with broken pumps... And he is not trying to sell one over another, since I told the guy I'm gonna buy the protein skimmer in my next trip to orlando, in march.

Deltec is so 1980s.

Deltec is so 1980s.

Not the newer (white) ones.

I had the TC2060 and it was better than any BK I ever owned.

Now with that said, I'm not sure where you can buy most models in the USA. I looked the other day and it looks like they are not available.

I will say that customer service with Deltec was notoriously bad. Bubble King is excellent.

I think the above mentioned skimmers are great but If I had to buy another skimmer I would look into reefdynamics, great made to order equipement, hand acrylic welds and I think the design of they're skimmers is perfect. It's also nice to buy from a local company doing this kind of craft work. Its not easy to find people taking such pride in their design and overall philosophy.

A friend had a 2060 and sold it because it could not handle his 220g. The BM250 smashed the Deltec.

Reef Dynamics is great. I previously have Euroreefs and there has been no change. Hand made in the USA (California) and you can talk to the owner by picking up the phone. The quality of the skimmers are top notch. All the parts are easy to obtain and are quick to deliver.

I agree with the Reef Dynamics skimmers, I just wish they came with an Askoll based pump

Aquamaxx skimmers have been getting very good reults

Pump outside the body

Pump inside the body

I have a 450g DT and I'm going with BK Sm 300 it $2k one thing that I don't like its the pump is worth almost $800. The HIR750E of reef dynamics is almost $3K the pump is $370.

You could get an aquamaxx cone 7 for about $1300. 16" diameter and 2 sicce shark 5 pumps. It would handle a 500 gallon display.
