I need to fish-protect my heater in my QT. Can I just use PVC for this? drill a bunch of holes to allow for plenty of heat-escape routes? If so, what size holes and how many holes should I make? e.g. should i just drill it as much as possible?

Any other DIY options?

Or just don't buy stupid fish..
Never heard of anyone actually protecting fish from a heater body..
Of course I've never QT'd a fish either in all my years.

even with PVC attachments to hide in, all my Chromis seem to want to hide behind the heater... i lost 2 of them (out of 11) to burns from it.

I would look into that "needlepoint" plastic mesh from the craft store.. Could easily be wrapped to form a protective cage.
PVC would work too.. Just swiss cheese it.

Maybe suction cup it to the floor of the tank so you have a horizontal surface under it instead of vertical behind it? They might be less inclined to go under it then behind it
