I have a 30 gallon tank, 36" in length with an 800 gph circulation pump and a 100 gph HOB filter (just for floss and purigen). I'm aiming the pump at the wall, but I feel like my fish are struggling against the current, even on the opposite side of the tank. I don't see them really calm down anywhere.

Is 1 800gph pump too strong for a 3' tank?

Unless you are keeping SPS, you are a little on the high side. With that powerhead, you are almost at 30x your water volume. I would get one around 400-600 gph powerhead.

I have the same size tank with a 1250 a 750 and a 500 for a total of 83x turnover it is a barebottom tank but i have no problems with mine and i have 3 fish and maybe 3 dozen coral species. Do you have much live rock?? It will cut down the direct currents

I've got about 31lbs of rock, so I have a giant structure in the middle with two cave areas.

I think I'm just gonna chalk it up to the clowns being clowns. I turned off my pumps and they stayed in the same spot, and swam the same way. I think they just like it.

Not too much at all. I'm running a wp25 which pushes 2100gph, my skimmer & reactor in a 39g with no issue's. My clowns can swim against the current but prefer laying in my hairy mushrooms lol.

I have my rock set up to help create some lower flow dead zones clowns to tend to be a more stationary fish. I have 1 maroon but i also have a huge bta and he stays in it most of the time i also have. A scopas tang and a starry blenny. I can post some pics of my tank this evening and ph placement if it would help any if it was me i wouldnt be worried at all about Your flow
