Kalk smell

I mixed up some Kalk top off water and started dripping it, when I removed the lid on the 5 gallon bucket, it smelled funny. Is that normal?

Funny how? What was the source water and was the bucket clean?

Bucket wasn't new, but not dirty. Water was RODI and it just smells off...

I would describe it as musty, I made some new and threw that batch out. I think the smell was like Patrick after practice in dirty dancing....

Check your Rodi filters, mine gives a musky smell when they need to be replaced.....best test is to run it into a clean glass jar. A TDS meter helps too.

Clean glass jar that has seen any kind of soap could still give a false TDS reading. A zip loc bag would be better.

When you get the musty smell you need to disinfect the system.

The first carbon stage pulls out all your chlorine, after that microbes are free to grow in the water since there's no disinfectant left. You can end up with quite a bit of microbial life in your RODI unit over time. That will make the water have that musty smell and will sometimes cause mysterious TDS creep that doesn't seem to solve itself with new filters.

I know I've seen BFS going around with a good set of instructions on how to disinfect a RODI system.

When the Kalk has the Patrick Swazye odor, you are nearing the end of the kalkwassers usefulness, but it's still OK.

However, when the stench hits you like Chuck Norris, it's definately time to dump it (before somebody gets hurt).
