Thats a hard sized tank for wow fish. Almost anything is subjective-and it may depend on the individual personality of the fish and the setup being well suited to it. If it is the 36x12x24 tank I would consider a flasher wrasse. If it is a cube format I might think of a dwarf angel, with the understanding it may outgrow the tank. Smaller tanks are often more interesting with smaller fish that "bring you into the tank" to view them. The red and white spotted hawkfish- or flame hawkfish. any of the interestingly colored blennies. The yellow brotulid is a fascinating fish that is not unlike a freshwater knife fish in swimming motion. They are cheap on divers den as well.

If you don't care about price, a candy basslet is perfectly suited for that size tank

I love candy basslets but out of my price range. Any other cool fish that would work?

I love the flasher wrasses. These are my McCoskers:

Any cool unusual wrasses?

Not many that can be kept longterm in a 45. What are the dimensions?

mystery wrasses are very cool and personable.

How about a Sohal Tang, as in, "WOW, why is that fish in there?"

With those dimensions, the only Wrasses I can recommend would be those that work in a 30 gallon or less, so one from the Wetmorella genus (Possum), Pseudocheilinops ataenia (Pink Streaked Wrasse), and Minilabrus striatus (Minute Wrasse). Basically all mentioned are uncommon, and definitely unusual :)

How about halichoeres species?

:ape:

It depends on your definition of 'wow.' If you're willing to spend $60ish, a Helfrichi Firefish has lots of color, and would be good for your tank.

As others have said, you're really limited with your tank. So, to me, a 'wow' fish for your tank is something like a Court Jester Goby.

Also, a long term in the future, 'wow' fish could be a Mandarin.

I know that they are a bit over done but I still like several of the designer clownfish that are out there .... Prices can get a bit wild for some of the newer ones (ORA gold nugget for example) but some others are quite reasonable I have a pair of snowflakes in my tank they spawn once a month which definitely adds to the wow factor...

Could also go for a sunburst anthia (probably my favorite anthia) or a ventralis anthia (though your tank might be too small for one of those) or a white cap goby+ pistol shrimp as for affordable 'wow' factor wrasses I like the bipartitus though they can be finicky and again may not be suited to something that small

looking for some swimming fish.

I really doubt 1 Mandarin will work and be healthy, much less 2.

It's not a guarantee. It might increase your chances, but with aggressive fish like clowns your odds aren't great, especially with 2. Also you'll need to feed them frequently and you have an SPS tank, those two don't generally mix.

With your clowns you could get a pair of Yasha Hase Gobies, or something similar. There are also a lot of amazing Blennies you could choose from. Google images of blennies to see all the varieties. If you can't find some of the rarer ones, http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+1926+2229&pcatid=2229 are my favorites.

Yellow assessor basslet
Swissguard basslet
Flameback angel
Helfrichi firefish
Blue spot jawfish

Those are some of the most eye catching fish I can think of that will for in your tank.

Will the flameback angel nip at the corals?

Keep the ideas coming.

How about any anthias?

How about any anthias?

Sunburst
Ventralis (definitely more of an advanced species)
Borbonious

Rest might be too big for your tank

What about a Resplendent Anthias?

I kept yellow assessor basslets in our 45 cube, and helfrichi firefish, and swissguard basslet. Any of them should do well for you.
We currently have a group of assessors in our 205g, 8 gold assessors and 2 randali (all ORA).
I would steer away from the ventralis and the borbonius. Ventralis are extremely difficult, and in my honest opinion, the borb will get too big. We did keep a sunburst in our 45 cube, and she did well. She is about 2". She lives in the 205 now, along with a pair of borbs, a pair of long fin ventralis (way too big for a 45g cube), and four cooperi anthias. Our long fin ventralis are about 3.5" and 4". Our year old borb is more than 3", and he was the size of a quarter when we bought him last February.

You're probably right on both counts ... Borbonious getting too big and ventralis too difficult... But those two are definitely wow anthias and other than the sunburst are the smallest wow anthias that I could think of, would love to see pics of your ventralis if you have them :)
