I want to make sure all critters are dead before I put in my sump? Any suggestions?

Bleach, fresh water soak, let it dry out, etc...

How long should it take?

My vote is a fresh water soak for a week, then dry them out for another week. If you really want to be sure, look into whether the blocks are oven-safe...

Bleach it for a couple of hours. Rinse in tap water(soak it) till you no longer smell bleach. Put it in the oven @250-300 degrees until it is dry. Then use it. Be careful coming out of oven. HOT. Better yet, shut off the oven then let it cool on its own.

I would not recommend putting a porous rock you soaked in water in the oven. Fresh water soak for a few days should be plenty.

I don't like the idea of putting it in the oven either. I would bleach it, soak in fresh water, and let it sit for a week or two.

Yeah, if you boil, put anything in high temp that has zoo's or the like, you are running the risk of airborne toxins infecting your lungs and sending you straight to the ER where they won't have a clue of what's going on or how to treat the toxins while you're feeling near death, can't breathe, running fever, with body aches like the flu! Not a good idea. :-)

Freshwater soak in fridge. :-)

That would be better than the oven.

Do however you want. I've owned a marine and fresh pet shop for many yrs. I've had no problems doing it this way. And I'm over 60 yrs.old. its not going to send toxins into the air or stuff like that. The oven is just a quicker way of drying it. I started my first pet shop when I was 19. I've been bleaching coral and gravel(& other types of aquarium decor. that way) for longer than most people on here are old. As with anything you want to be careful. Also, at home, I've had as many as 32 aquariums setup at one time. I'm not new to this.

Also, soaking in freshwater in the fridge does absolutely nothing.

No disrespect brother, I've just heard too many horror stories with boiling rock or heat that produces steam.
