View Full Version : Question on Tank size
I just got an open top cube (DT 50, 'fuge 20), Does "tank size" consist of just the DT tank measurement, or the total water volume? Would it be considered a 50 or '70' gallon? I seem to see it both ways....
(and yes, I have a 1/4" screen top to prevent carpet surfing.) :)
(I am not totally new to the hobby. Have run a JBJ BioCube for 3 yrs now. Just new to the whole sump, 'fuge etc set ups)
Thanks!

your tank size is 50G, the total water volume is 70G.
your tank size is 50G, the total water volume is 70G.
Perfect. :) Thanks

Although with rock your true water volume (what you use to determine dosing, additives and medications) is probably close to 50-55 gallons.
and your fuge is likely not filled to the rim, hopefully 1/2-3/4 to allow for power outage overflow.
Also, consider the internal dimensions (including the height of the actual water level) of the tank when calculating the water volume. May not make much of a difference on a 3/8" glass, but adds up. E.g. the 50g's stated is calculated on the outside dimensions of the tank all the way up to the top). And as stated above, rock, etc, will take up volume as well. All important when considering how much dosage you use for meds and other additives.
Thanks guys! Very helpful info. That is exactly the input i needed. :) - No fuge is just 1/2 full. I did know better than filling it 100% :D

Agree with NTGILL, you have 70 gallon total system, which includes a 20g fuge. It's understood that the actual water will be less, but in describing you go with total capacity.
