I spent the day in NYC yesterday and came home late to find my typically light-brown Lawnmower (algae) Blenny's face chalky white, along with the same chalky white blotches around his pectoral fins. I thought I was looking at ich on steroids or some other disease.

Turns out, that's one of his tricks. It slowly faded before my eyes after I turned on the light, and he's completely back to 'normal' now. I knew they changed color, sometimes dramatically, but this was crazy. Glad for the false alarm.

Anyone else have one of these? They're very cool.

Mine does that all the time... first time he did it, he turned ghost white. I thought he was dead, but swam away happy as can be.

Best green hair algae eater I've ever had.

Our lawnmower is very light tannish color right now to match the sand he's in, hiding under a conch shell. They're amazing little guys...

mine does that on a regular basis................... We call him 'Al'..........he is the puppy of the tank (even though he is 4+") and follows us all over.

How's this for a change? (( I knew that they would go to black, but it was my understanding that it happens with age -- which is not this case )).

About a day's difference,

Gotta love the lawnmower blennies! Ours is Ralph - he's extremely shy but has a ton of personality when he shows himself. I haven't noticed any wild color changes - just light brown or dark brown. I wish I could get a picture but he won't come out long enough.

My wife came home one afternoon and was greeted by 'Al' and she had to take this pic.
He is very lovable and comical. I love him
