Black Sponge? Removal

I have a black thing on some live rock that started growing next to some polyps. See the pictures. Some people in the past thought it was a sponge? It keeps growing larger and is unsightly.

How can I remove this thing? I don't know if I try to cut it or pull it off, if toxins will be released etc… that could harm my other livestock.


Any suggestions?

Personally would not worry about it. Sponges are good filter feeders and in my experience are slow growing.

Yeah, i'd leave it. Try to ID it or get a better close up pic so someone else can ID it.

Looks like what you said. If it is I have some in my tank. Hasn't been a problem for me. My lemon peel angel eats it sometimes.
