View Full Version : Mp10s on a standard 120, or a 93g marineland cube?

Basically that sums it up. I might pick up a 120 for a new display, but wana use the 2 mp10s now now have, and probably add two more. I know Swannyson, former TOTM, used two of them on the back of the 180 he had. I will look up the specs on max thickness with ecotech, but I'm just curious if anyone here uses them on a 120 standard 4 x 2 x 2 display...

I was gonna go with something not so high, but I've decided regardless of what I get for a new display, I need 2' high for many reasons. The width isn't as crucial, and I may go with a standard 90g if not the 120. But I'd really like the extra depth. I'm also considering a 93g cube, and I'm thinking the glass on that is pretty thick too.

I would go with MP40's. MP10's are not recommended on .5" glass. There is a calculator on their site.

Thank you for your response. I saw the site after my original inquiry. I see quite a few folks actually use them on 1/2" glass if they are anchor/hung from above. A former TOTM used them on his 180 long term. Unfortunately mp40s are out of my budget for now and quite some time ahead. Normally I'm not one to cut corners whatsoever, but I need to be a little more frugal at this time, lol.

You can use them on 1/2" glass, but make sure you use the sticky things to take some weight off of the magnets. After algea grows around the wetside, it will stay no problems. But that said, I would use MP40's. I have 3 mp10's on my 90 and I am working on switching them for mp40's. I have them nearly maxed out on reefcrest and I still get slime on the top of my water or cyano on the sand. there just isn't enough undertow to get both on the mp10.

Understood. I would be using 4 mp10s if I go with a 120. Placed to maximize flow across the sand bed and across the top of the water column. All in theory at this point. I might go with a 90g standard, or a 93g cube of not the 120.

Well again 40s are out of my budget. So I'm asking opinions on what I have to work with. I have had 40s in the past, I know they rock, lol ;)

The cost of 2 mp10s=1 mp40. I would buy an MP40 and sell the 10's to cover the cost.

That's a thought I'm aware of, but I would still need another mp40. I wouldn't get enough for the two I have to cover the cost of a new mp40. The mp10s I have are not wireless. So I would have to throw in at least another 120 or so to get one mp40 to replace them. And still need another on top of that. And with the aquascape I'm gonna have, the 40s wouldn't get all the spots and areas as good as 4 well placed 10s would.

40s are not an option or something I'm willing to do. I would love it if the responses would stay objective to my direct questions.

I have 4 wireless mp 10 on a marineland 93 rimless cube. The glass on these are tanks are under 1/2 inch thick and work well. MP 40 would be nice but already had these bought and paid for and didn't want to take a beating on them to sell.
