Hey all. I've had many aquariums over the years. I have been out of it for about 12 years now and looking to make a come back.
I recently ordered a 300 gallon tank and stand. Quite honestly bit of a impulse buy. But I'm long overdue to rejoin my favourite hobby.
I have some questions.
1. I am looking to go with a super octopus 5000 skimmer. It's rated for 400 gallons. Would it hurt me to go with the smaller unit rated for 300 gallons? My main issue is height. The stand leaves me 28" of height. This skimmer is 25". But I need space in order to ever remove the skimmer from sump for cleaning. So my sump can't be anymore then 16". Is this ok?
2. Flow is now killing me. I won't be able to fit one long 6' tank under the stand. I will probably need to fit two 3' in order to get them in the cabinet. I was thinking making one for skimmer and calcium reactor. Other for Refugium. In order to have both sumps running is it better to have them run in line of each other? Or can I have two pumps? One running the sump and other running the Refugium. I was trying to go over in my head if this made sense? If the two pumps were not running equal speed would this cause issues? The tank will have two separate overflows?
3. How much flow can a 1.5" pipe and over flow handle?
4. I don't want a closed loop. I prefer power heads. I love how the eotechs have no power cord. They are crazy expensive though. Is there any other companies that have something similar? In a tank this size in order to keep Lps and sps ill need about 9000gph. I imagine with pumps I won't get a whole lot more then 2000 each. So I need to make up 5000 more. Will two 40w eotechs do the trick?
