So I really like the design of the coast to coast overflows so I'm gonna try and build my own. My question is do you need the slots and what is the purpose of them? I'm having a place cut me 2 pieces of black acrylic to the inside length of my aquarium and it's gonna be 5 inches tall and 4 in deep does this sound alright for a 90 gallon?

No Slots. Better Surface skimming without slots.

The slots are used to keep out fish and snails. But your better off just putting gutter guard ontop of the overflow box.

I think he means something like this

I think that would still skim the surface better then the slots but be safe for keeping out most animals.

In my small about of experience, the teeth in the overflow restrict flow a little and made mine more noisy, I removed them and just put gutter guard around my overflow piping to stop things from going into the sump. If a fish ever makes it over the overflow just net him back into the display.
