I seen reefbreeders offers a red LED based bulb for growing macro algae. anybody using them or something similiar to them? any advantages of running these over a spiral CFL 65k bulb?

yeah, I'm running one in my fuge to grow Chaeto and Gracilaria and it grows like mad. Looks pretty weird though.

yea im always used to using the spiral 65k bulbs. but like other LEDs you dont have to change these out. and you can find them wayyy cheaper then what reefbreeders has them for, but was wondering how well they macro does under these lights. thanx for the reply

I'm using Coral Compulsion's Fuge LED.

You can also check out build my LED, they have a fuge light as well.

Lowes also has some PAR20, 30, and 38 LED flood lights that work well. Made by utility tech. 5,000k.

I'm all about getting stuff locally if I can, but is Lowes PAR 38 stuff going to be the right color. I think that's the real question. I would imagine chaeto is pretty unforgiving (I've never done research), but color is important for everything else..... any idea, or experience here?

The opposite actually (unless you meant 'forgiving') - I have found chaeto to grow under most lights. Perhaps it would do a bit better under the red/blue of a plant-grow light, but mine does fine under a 6500K home depot LED. I do use a pair of the Reefbreeders Fuge bulbs to light my ATO where I'm much more interested in maxing out algae growth. Results have been spectacular.

My buddy is using one and he has cut his cheato back twice in less than two months.

I just bought mine. Running it on a pod tank.

Running the coral compulsion on my fuge, because it has 120 degree optics with great spread.

The reef breeders does not come standard with that kind of spread. Plus it cost more.

Here is the light I got at lowes for my pod tank. They're under $35.

You could get the par38 it's like $29.99. Can't go wrong with that price.

They also have the clamp on light fixtures that are cheap.
