I'm in the planning stages for a 29g reef tank and I'd like some input on the rock. I was thinking of using dry base rock with live rock. But what's y'all's thoughts on using Real Reef Rock? I'm thinking that using actual live rock has more good than bad that comes with it. I look fwd to your input.

I used live rock on my original set up and l ended up fighting bristle worms, hair algae and bubble algae. I finally beat it but it wasnt easy. This time around I bought dry rock, I do not want to go through that again.

I got the "real reef rock" for my last tank, it just didn't do much for me, aesthetically mostly. So this tank I used it to seed the tank since I'm terrified of pests like worms.

I went with Real Reef Rock. Couldn't be happier. :)

I used dry rock on every tank I've set up since my first tank. Real Reef Rock has all the same benefits with 1 major pro and one major con.

Pro: Looks way better than chalky white dry rock(although dry rock will color up eventually)

Con: It's expensive as hell! There's places to get dry rock for under two dollars per pound.

BRS eco-saver rock with a chunk of live rock is the most affordable option.

Thanks for the input. But I'm still not sure what to do but I have time to think about it.

Im in the process of setting up a 29g too. I ordered 30lbs of reef cleaners rock. I plan to purchase an additional 5lbs of live rock to seed the tank. Probably toss in a small dead shrimp as well.

That "real reef rock" is ridiculous looking and it's not porous, unable to support immense amounts of denitrifying bacteria that actual live rock can support.

Get normal rock. Dry, live, or a combo.
I prefer live.

I fully agree with this statement. It's dense, and overpriced.

Dry rock for about 1.25 a pound, with 10-20% live. Won't look as pretty at first, but once it develops, you save a ton of cash and will have grown your own reef!

+1 for Dry Reef Rock. Good shape and easy to stack them together. They have alot of holes to add frags + no pest
