View Full Version : Plumbing a drain for water changes

I just got my Saltwater mixing station finished and now I need a drain.
I went through the wall of my fish room and made a hole big enough for a 1" pipe to fit through. I used a LittleGiant 1000gph pump and 7/8 hose and pumped 5 gallons of water from a bucket through it and it did not gurgle back inside or run over. So I am guessing that 1" pipe my be sufficient. The entire outside run of pipe will be about 300 feet long and 1" in diameter to get my saltwater to the driveway and out of my yard.
Now, before I cut and glue all my inside pipe together, does anyone know of a reason that the inside inlet should be larger than 1 inch?
My plans are to hard plumb this with a internal pump in my sump for water changes. I have my saltwater mixing barrel plumbed into my sump now. So I just flip a switch and the Panworld 40 pumps water to the sump.
I'd like to do the same with the waste water from water changes. Just pump it from the sump into the drain via a submerged pump.
Anyone experienced and problems with this method?

Add an air hole somewhere in the line above the sump. Without one I'd be worried that a siphon could start and drain your sump.

300 feet is a lot of pipe. If it is all sloping down then it is probably no problem, but if it is horizontal or has much rise to it you'll likely end up with water just sitting in the pipe. If freezing is a possibility in your area that might be worth considering. Probably have to be pretty cold to freeze a buried pipe with salt water in it, but I'm not sure exactly how cold.

The entire run of pipe is going down hill. But a large part of the pipe will be exposed. About 50 feet of it will be above ground. But I think it has enough slope to it that the pipe will drain and leave nothing in there to freeze. Ill just have to schedule water changes on days its above freezing in the winter months.
As for the anti siphon hole...I am going to have a ball valve in line mainly to keep critters from entering the house through the pipe. But it will also serve as a shut off when not in use.

Great set up. That's what I am aiming for.

Here is what I got so far. I don't have enough room for a utility sink. So the vertical pipe is 1 1/2 so I can pour things down it and also use as a siphon drain for cleaning out the sump and the sand bed. The lower part will accept a flexible hose running from the sump drain pump. So that pump will drain the sump and my Pan world 40 will transfer the fresh saltwater back to the sump.
