G'day
Got another question and i know all Nems tend to move...
But I was wondering if people that keep multiple types of Nems could comment on the mobility of the various species like BTA/Mini Maxi/Carpet/etc.
Cheers

My carpets all have stayed near the bottom of the tank while my rbta cruise the upper regions of the rock. They usually stay in the same areas but not always

Hmmm...
They just sound too risky if you want anything else...like even other nems.

Most anemones don't usually move once settled in, in less something like lighting or flow gets changed. Bta's are the exception and I think they just like to travel. My Haddoni and Ritteri have never moved from where I've placed them

Well the idea I had or have is a tank split in 3 (not literally) but in the middle it's all Mini-Maxis then on 1 side is a long tentacle type nem whilst the other side is a large bubbly type nem....

In theory that sounds like it would work. But remember that they will move to where they are happy. so keeping them all seperated would be hard. Again like i posted on your other thread it all comes down to tank size. Lta's get big. Bubble tips can get 12+ inches and then split so you have several small ones. Mini-maxi's ive never tried as they are non hosting species to clowns. A big enough tank and I could see that working but it would take at least a 55 gallon tank to pull that off.

I wonder....
In a tank the size that I have and If I had my heart set on at least 1 Mini-Maxi what else could I keep in the tank, Nem wise ?

I would do a couple of mini maxi's and a couple bta's. Try to get the mini maxi's in the lower level and the bta's toward the top. Then as they split sell them. Most bta's don't usually reach the really large sizes before they split. And try to mix the colors up. I could see that being a really nice tank. wit a good pair of clowns. Have you ever saw Marvins bta tank?

Sounds interesting :) be easy to make a sort of fake wall for the BTAs to sit up on whilst the Mini Maxis sit on the base :D can anything host Mini-Maxis ?

Not sure. I don't know that I've ever saw a clown host them but clowns are weird their apt to host in anything. Anemone crabs might.

I've made my decision and it will require some artistic design but what I am visioning should come to success like everything else I have so far with the entire systems...
Going to split the tank! :D
But with a fancy unique divider that itself can only be described in it's completion...but at best, imagine a "sand encrusted eggcrate wall", the eggcrate hidden but the holes still there... ;)... flow, protection, stylish.
In 1 half the Mini Maxi that I can't take my eyes off and in the other half...
X...
Right now it's a toss up between an RBTA or a Hell's Fire (more likely the RBTA cause I really want hosting things :D).

I would pass on the hellfire there really not very safe to have from what I've saw and read about them. I really don't see why you need the divider. As the bta or the mini maxi if they so choose can just go over the top of it and the waters mixing anyways. Plus you then would have flow issues on both sides to deal with. Just leave a gap in your live rock to keep them from mixing. If if they should come in contact neither of them have that powerful of a sting and they would quickly seperate.

I'd rather have as much room possible in the tank and from what I have been reading the hellfire needs or likes sand to seat its foot in whilst the Mini Maxi attachs to Live Rock etc.
The tank has 2 powerheads as is so the flow wouldn't be a problem...
And there is no way they are going to get over, through or under the divider.... :) not mine!

The only anemone-proof barriers I've seen are 1)glass/acrylic, 2) screen (netting, craft mesh, etc). It needs very small holes, or it will not work completely.
I have personally seen large (8" expanded) BTA's squeeze through the 1/8" slits of an overflow box. Eggcrate really will do nothing to stop an anemone from going through if it decides to. Also, as others have already stated, flow will be an issue. I know you say you will have a powerhead on each side of the tank, but you are creating an area of restriction, which will lead to dead spots for flow in your tank. I understand your goals, but practically speaking I do not see it working as well as you may. I see it being a lot of time and effort for long-term frustration.
Additionally, even if it works on day 1, I do not see it working long-term, or looking good long term. If you have excess nutrients, the sand/epoxy-coated eggcrate will be a perfect spot for algae to grow. Good luck removing the algae without also messing up your sand/epoxy layer. If you do not have excess nutrient problems, the eggcrate will not stay sand-looking, but rather will grow coroline algae. In this case, I don't see a way that it won't just look like what you have described - sand/epoxy-coated eggcrate. It will not be natural looking, and IMHO will look just a bit awkward.
BTA's don't walk nearly as much as some people believe - IF you can provide for them an adequate environment. I don't see why you couldn't have your maxi's on one side of the tank, and the BTA's on the other. Seperate by islands, and start slow to make sure they do not walk (i.e. you are providing adequate environments).

One things that is predictable about nems is that they are unpredictable.
If you're willing to be extremely patient, you can do what buess describes. Populated with one species first, and see where it goes. Then you can slowly try to add the other species on the opposite end. With some luck you'll be able to get the flow right, and they won't float into each other.
In terms of hosting, I've seen tapetum host sexy/anemone shrimp.

I would consider this scenario:
sand - H. Malu, Catalaphyllia coral
mid rocks - mini maxis, rock anemones
top - torch corals various colors
none of those like high flow
get some wave making pump like jebao wp-10 or wp-25 for your tank size.
Watch all that beauty dance :D
