I'm missing my skunk cleaner and a chromis. I caught him with a hermit crab in his clutches earlier today...

If I evict him to my fuge I'm afraid he will eat too many pods that my mandarin needs. What would you do?

that looks like a banded coral shrimp? They are generally reef safe. is it possible that the skunk and chromis died and he picked them up?

I had the same issue with my CBS a while ago. He was tiny when I got him and he grew exponentially as my chromis and CUC numbers thinned. I caught him and traded him to my LFS for store credit.

They are not fish safe.

I'm thinking store credit towards a new skunk sounds good.

When the coral banded is in hunting mode it has a good 6 inch reach. Plenty big enough to become a serious predator. I have seen nips and injuries on my fish from time to time but didn't think he would ever take anyone down but he's been busy this week.

Reef safe, no fish safe. :(

CBS personalities seem to be incredibly random. There's horror stories of people seeing them catching one of their fish live-stock right before their eyes, and plenty of stories from people who have kept "model citizen" CBS for years in their tanks. Personally, I chose not to get a CBS after delving into a deep research-mode before buying one as I'd rather not risk my live stock becoming an expensive CBS meal, even if there's a chance of the CBS being a "good guy". This is also why I didn't get an arrow crab as the majority turn out to be jerks even if there are a few good reports from people.
However, I've heard that they are generally pretty darn territorial with other shrimp species, so your Cleaner is likely gone.

Not in my tank, nope.
All my little Gobies would hate me.

That's pretty impressive catching a chromis and ripping a hermit out. You think it can take on a damsel? :)

Anyways, put him in the fuge and see if anything else drops dead in your tank. If so, you may have other predators in there.

My coral banded will try and catch my fish as they swim by his cave. I have never seen him catch any but I have had a sixline wrasse and royal gramma mysteriously disappear and both had coincidentally taken up home by his cave so I am suspicious it was his work.

Sleeping fish are easy prey for CBS.

He is in the fuge until I head to the LFS this weekend.

Yes. Which happens all the time.

I have kept these shrimps for years without problems. The key is to not house with other shrimps and to make sure they get enough to eat. I feed mine a small piece of grocery store bought raw shrimp once a week along as well with making sure some leftovers are available at daily feedings. With that said, maybe best not house with small blennies/gobies just in case!
