So I've got some algae in my 75 now. I'm not sure how to post photos. One type is bright green, and is growing on the rocks. It doesn't come off easily. It isn't slimy. It's almost like someone is painting the rocks green in places. Could this be green coraline? It's actually kinda pretty--I'd like to leave it as long as it isn't going to take over...

I've got rust colored stuff spreading across the sand bed only. That is probably cyano right?

You can post pics in photobucket and then take their IMG URL and paste it into this text box.

Not sure on the green algae...pic would be best.

The rust colored is either diatoms or cyano.

The rust colored algae on the sand bed sounds more like diatoms to me. As far as that bright green algae on the rocks goes, IME this is usually a prelude to the purple coralline algae that most of us have in our tanks. (no worries)

not sure about the green could be a type of coraline algae (good) but the brown stuff looks like diatoms to me (not good). diatoms are a sign of extra nitrates and phosphates

has the tank cycled yet? diatoms are a natural part of the cycling of a saltwater tank

Yeah, the tank is only 2 months old, so,it just finished its official cycle a couple of weeks ago. I know I have some extra nitrates so that makes sense. Just couldn't tell diatoms from cyano. Makes sense as I saw my emerald crab eating it last night and I don't think they eat cyano?

First it will be Diatoms, than the red slime, than the hair Algae, Welcome to the Ugly phase of a salt tank (Also known as new tank syndrome)

The Bright green stuff looks like start coraline

Now I'm noticing air bubbles trapped in them. There aren't strings or "snot" appearing things, but there are a bunch of tiny bubbles trapped in the stuff. Could it be dinoflagellates?

It looks like i may be having the same diatom issue, it basically bloomed in one day. my tank is about 6-8 weeks. My nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, high ph, and alkalinity are all reading right where they should be, testing with API. Are there preventative measures to be taken or is it one of those things you have to ride out?

as long as you're using good source water (RO/DI) and keeping nutrients low, diatoms will run their course once silicates are gone. Diatoms usually go away on their own but cyano will need manual removal. Bubbles in it makes it sound more like cyano. I doubt you would have dinos in a tank that young - I could be totally wrong on that though
