I am building a wooden stand for my 40 breeder fuge and was wondering if it is necessary to paint the wood?

I don't mind having it as just plain wood, but was wondering if it really is necessary to paint it?

If you want it to last you better protect it somehow. Exposure to saltwater or water period is not good for wood.

I mean its not going to be getting wet or soaked in saltwater, itd just be near the display/sump and the tank on top.

If it has water over it, it'll have water on it, in it and under it at some point.

It's much easier to do the right thing now.

Not to mention if you have a sump you have to worry about evaporation

If water drips on it, and most likely will you will end up having water stains.
I would just clear coat it, it will look better and last longer, but that is up to you of course, no you don't have to seal it.
I use minwax fast drying poly, super easy, forgiving, low VOC

For inside the stand I use killz, this help with fighting mold from evaporation.
To keep the color of my wood I go with min wax natural 209 stain, single coat.

That is a stain. Won't protect the wood from water. After the stain apply 2-3 coats of Poly following manufacture's instructions. Best to use oil based poly if you use an oil based stain.

Yeah I would guess OP wants to keep it simple if they even do anything at all, so a clear is the easiest and least amount of steps/work.
Stains still need to be sealed, and even kilz should be sealed too really.

I ordered a spray polyurethane to seal the stand, might as well have peace of mind.
