I am building my first saltwater tank and I cannot come to a conclusion on which power head to purchase, Ecotech or Tunze. These pumps will also be integrated to an Apex.

My tank is a 60 gallon cube and measures 24x24x24.

I would like to hear every ones opinions and thoughts on the following powerheads:

EcoTech Marine VorTech MP10wES
Tunze Turbelle 6055

I just went through a similar decision but with one model stronger. After hearing arguments from people on both sides, I decided to go with the Tunze. Reasons being, it is more reliable, you can change the direction of the flow to suit your needs, and a lot quieter. The only thing that kept drawing me to the vortech was the small in tank footprint, but after going back and forth, I decided the tunze was better for me.

How much flow are you looking for?

If you go with Tunze, and I would, you may want to consider the 6095 as opposed to the 6055. The 6095 has a much wider flow than the 6055 and will cover a wider area, which is what you will need with a 24x24x24 area.

I use a pair of Tunze 6055's on a 7095 controller on my 30" x 20" x 20" lps/sps tank.
I have them at about 60% max right now.
Quiet, dependable, and have lasted for years.

I have two Vortec pumps that I love but given the dimensions of your tank I would choose the Tunze 6095's on an Apex w/vdm module for the win.

I switch back and forth every couple years... They are both wonderful, but both have their trade-offs.

I'd recommend going with 6095's instead of 6055's.

Two mp10 pumps on the back, especially if it's a black back would be slick. Either pump is a good investment.

What are you trying to keep?

I have two mp10s on my 4' long 60 gallon and it's great. But since your 60 gallon is a 2' cube, I think you may want to consider the new sicce voyager nano if you aren't gonna keep any SPS. It's small, powerful (near 600 GPH) for its size, price ($36), and super quiet. I saw two mounted to a LPS nano that's about the size of your tank at a LFS and was pleasantly surprised by it. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/15/su8emy4u.jpg

I bought a mp-10w for my 25 gal cube so I'm biased.

May I suggest a set of the Jeabo MP25's? With the reef angel cable you can wire them into your Apex's vdm module and be out the door for under 200 bucks..

I had been using Tunze, two 6105 on a 125 in fact for many years. The are great, very dependable pumps and I would highly recommend them. I sold the set when I had a tank crash due to weather and then decided to take a break from reefing. I am back but currently running Jebao 40's with the dual controller. They have preformed well thus far and I am happy with them but time will tell if they can last and are as dependable as Tunze.

I have to vote Tunze. I have used both and by and far I prefer Tunze. They are a bit mor obtrusive in the tank but with the smaller nano series not much. The Vortecs were louder and had more issues Ime. I would also concur with the statement above of going with the 6095. Wider flow and a great controllable unit. Either would get the job done but in my experience I would recommend a Tunze model.

What how thick is the glass on your 60g? I'm in the process of building a 60g cube and was told that for a rimless tank the glass would be 1/2". MP10's are only recommended for up to 3/8" thick glass.

I am running 3/8" acrylic.

But based on all the kind responses, it looks like Tunze is the proper candidate and based on advice I will probably go with the 6095's.

Thanks for the input
