Been fighting some brown string/hair in my tank, doesn't look like snot like dinos nor does it get bubbles and my snails haven't died. Just looks like brown hair, it likes to attach to SPS corals like the bleached acro in the pic.

I siphoned out what I could today and this what they did in the bucket.

Even with no air bubble, they look dinos to me...

Acro doesn't look bleached to me; it looks dead. Alage pretty much only grows on dead skeletons.

What makes you think is Cyano, and thanks to everybody who pointed out the acro is dead. I pulled it out.

I had that exact stringy blackish effect my tank when I started up my 180.
dino looks like it has a body to it with major bubble at the end.

can you post more photo's of the sand bed?

How did you get rid of it? My tank has been running for 2.5 years, everything was fine until I took my bio pellets off line more then a year ago, started with green hair algae fought that for months with monthly GFO change and weekly water change. Finally got rid of the hair algae completely around November/December of last year and then this started around February. They get really heavy on my acrylic frag rack when I have it in the tank. Here's a pic of my sandbed and of it on a birdsnest frag.

After many months of fighting I ended up using redcyano rx
but made some major changes, I increased flow started carbon dosing and went to leds. I also started to use rowaphos have not had a break out in 3 years.

Po4? And no4? Are you using tap water? I did at first and had high tds.

My po4 ranges from .0-.02 on a Hannah checker and nitrate is zero on a Red Sea kit. I use nothing but RO/DI water

could be low nutrients (i know that sounds crazy) but more and more articles are showing super low nutrients causing bacterial mats (like vodka and vinegar dosing)
I would try redcyano rx to get rid of it than keep reef stable.
are you using LEDs or t5's - red spectrum also will accelerate growth

I've been thinking low nutrients too, I've been feeding more trying to get my nitrate up a little. I'll add a couple more fish too. I'm using radium metal halide only for lighting.

I concur... dino's

I also covered the tank & no lights for 3 days and wallah goodbye dino's.

Notes:
1. If i did a water change the dino's would come right back (seemed like a jump start).
2. Even though the dino's appeared gone to my eye, my finer mesh filter sock would literally plug up in 24 hours for a week or 2 after the lights out treatment.

So from my personal experience, after the lights out treatment no W.C. for a while and redue the lights out treatment (if needed) at the 1st sign of the Dino's returning.
