http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2264520

I will be making some changes to try to make things simple and easier for me to take care of my tank..first changes will be removing the front center brace and supporting it with 2x6 so I
Wont have anything in the way..ideas comments welcome

Look up rocket engineers stand thread. There is a lot of explaining and engineering related answers in the thread. I'd think you would need to rebuild it myself.. At least take the skin off to reinforce the frame if it's possible..

thank you I had great results running zeovit but my condition is not helping..if I keep it simple my son can do all the water change once a week and all I have to worry about is stability.

Hey dude, hope you are feeling better. I also have a medical issue and at one point thought of taking the system down...

I followed the old thread and will be following this one for sure.

In terms of equipment, are you going for the same lights/skimmer etc? Or going for something different?

PS I would love to have a stand without the centre support, so although I dont know the answer to your question, I'll be following to see what the experts say. :D

thanks Sahin I appreciate your comments. .how are feeling nowadays. ..I hope everything is well..
I looked at this change on the brighter side of it rather than the negative..I haven't decided yet exactly..im thinking orphek v.2 but I want the ati hybrid also..im getting vertex alpha 200 when money permits and I might be building another sump or just build a fuge ..so far my focus is slowly get things and modify the stand..and build a acrylic basin for spill emergency. .

The texture on that ABS plastic will be covered easily by Coralline algae within 3 months. :) I have coralline algae on my bare bottomed tank covering 70% of the areas. Once coralline algae covers most of it, it looks quite nice in pink. :D

Look forward to this build.

The tank looks great could pass for brand new =).

Did you just wing it in the stand or use someone else's stand for reference? Only reason I ask is because I noticed two things that I read were major do not do's in your design.

I'm by far no expert though so I may be way off base but the way you have the angled 2x4 with only partial contact with the riser could lead to settling and shifting or breakage. Also the way you stubbed in the side risers sitting on the deck. When I built my stand I made sure all supporting beams went to the floor vs just resting on the deck like in the referenced thread.

I'm not trying to pick it apart as I'm far from an engineer I just followed this thread to get my stand without a beam in front/back.. But it's quite obvious there is more than one way to build a stand I'm just familiar with this one and learned about what's going on in that thread.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1567110

what you have to me seems to only be a plywood skin with most of the shear weight on screws vs the floor.. I personally wasn't willing to risk 1050 lbs of water on my floor so I followed it to the letter and it's super solid =).

Won't having that sheet on the bottom create issues later with a detritus build up underneath it? Dead space & detritus may be a recipe for that black sulfer smelling crap to collect.

Looks awesome so far love that scape..only suggestion I would makeis that plastic in the bottom might be hard to clean with it being textured like that. I had piece of glass cut to fit inside the bottom and painted the underside white and siliconed it in like you were talking about doing its super easy to clean just run my mag float across it every few days and I always have a nice bright white bottom...just a thought

thank you for your kind words and suggestion..I was thinking of just letting the bottom naturally get taking over by coraline algae so hopefully it would look more natural than the plastic that I have on there..and hopefully the cuc will take care of the unwanted algae..so do you also have bare bottom would love to see some pics..

got the frame done for my fans ran out of acrylic will need to finish the cover and mount...soon as I get an apex will start doing the wiring and also finish building a new sump..on light duty right now doctor told me to take an easy..I want to finish plumbing and fill it up but I will be patient..I am still hunting for the rails of my doors. I am also thinking of using an elos planet 2 dual 250w halides with 4 t5 ..and if I can come up with the money for a vertex alpha 200 then I will get it ..still need to get a geo crx and ap regulator lots of equipment needed still..

Here's the fish list that I am thinking of

10 anthias not sure which ones yet maybe a variety
A pair of ruby red dragonet
A blueface angelfish
A black tang this might take a while for me to get
A pair borbonious anthias this might be part of the 10

The corals will be a selected few
A few stags
Some aussie tables
And some reefraft acro that's waiting to go in the tank

Lps whatever catches my eye
zoas would be just a selected few that would pop in the tank..
And that is what I am thinking of so far for stocking list

So my wife told me I need to wait till we get back from vacation till I can fill it up so decided to do other things to keep me busy and not think of the tank to much so I decided to use some of my left over rocks from before and put it in my little landscape that we have in the front that will be my reef for now..lol

....let me also introduce a little bit of myself I am a BMW tech and real estate agent I love to work on cars but after my accident 2010 from a drunk driver its been really difficult to do what I love so I found something I also love doing finding families homes that they can call their own..after my accident I realized life is so short and that families matters most and make the best of what you have and enjoy life..every year we plan a family vacation to spend some quality time and just enjoy each others company. .I don't take things for granted specially my wife..that is why she lets me do what I want with my reef because we both know that what makes each other happy makes us happy as well..and she started to enjoy the reef as well that's why she is involved in building this new reef tank and plus it needs to look good in her house lol..enough of the mushy stuff here's an eye candy for car fanatics alike..my new toy that I am thinking of taking to the tracks..

thank you its just a short vacation its in July so I am just working on some other things to finish the stand and sump the doors is gonna take me atleast a few weeks to custom build I am having my wife do the artwork for the doors I am not sure yet of the designs just trying to brainstorm something with my wife..and then I would have to transfer the artwork on the door all freehand and that's what is gonna take time if I decide to go that route I just finished installing the hardware on the doori just need to paint the frame for the hardware I am trying to figure out also if I have enough space for a belt driven track to make the doors automatic will see.

I admire your ability to keep things in perspective - unfortunately, usually the most pertinent reminders of how quickly things can change come at times of loss - during the good times it is important to take a step back and truly enjoy it for what its worth.

I like the scape buddy, I think after it covers in coralline algae and coloured sticks it will look awesome. The over hangs are what does it for me I'm a big fan of them and also when people use a little imagination which you obviously have just by looking at it :)

Hi Dan:wave:, your a popular guy around RC so I thought I'd pop in and say hi.
The tank is coming up a treat and the attention to detail is excellent, the scape is really nice and when it's covered in colorful sticks it will be awesome. I'm in the middle of setting up a new tank and I'm really enjoying taking my time and doing things right, but I'm constantly telling myself not to rush it just because I want water in it:) I have subscribed as I think this will be a spectacular tank when done.

A little update I got the light shelf done thanks to Daveocean for building the shelf for me I just finish painting it and installed the pully system and got the most the things I need for the automatic lift. I will have 2 safety feature added to the lift system just in case anything it will not drop completely into the water..I need to place the cables out the way but for now this is how far I got done...still a bit messy

the shelf is for the winch so I can move the fixture up and down with a button..and all the ballast for halide and also the wires will be up on the shelf also along with an eb4 ..the pully system is installed already just need the eb4 and it should be operational..

On probs Dan, I look forward to seeing your build progress:D.
The light rack looks really awesome, I'm going for a similar system in raising the lights but not as high tech as yours. Mines more of a manual system though. I like that sort of system as when you have to do stuff in the tank all you have to do is raise to lights and your away.
Its coming along very nicely Dan, when do you think there will be water in it?

thank you my friend I was gonna go with a moving floating canopy but I figured it was cheaper for me to go this route and also cleaner look and I will be able to put the ballast on the shelf and they're hidden ..ya like I said my goal is to make life easier as much as possible ..all things I am doing now are the things I wish I had done on my previous build..ya you will like having an ease to raise you lights my friend for maintenance and for coral acclimation..can't wait to see what you do...I will be filling hopefully at the end of the month but if not its ok I still got a lot of things to add specially my control box that I need to finish.

As for the camera. I'd highly recommend getting the GoPro app, it makes using the camera soooooo much easier. You can use your phone as a viewfinder and you can change settings and operate the shutter with out moving the camera, so you don't get any camera shake. Next question, did you have spot metering on when you took the pics?

Yeah I thought that might be the case with the WiFi, I haven't used mine underwater yet so I didn't know. Spot metering means that the camera correctly exposes and compensates what ever is in the middle of the lens, So you'll get better colors. I'm still at a miss as to why its not getting the corals in razor sharp focus:( I'll keep thinking on that one:confused:

What does the sand look like Dan? I would add sand for its filtering, biodiversity and looks but make sure its not going to blow around with the flow.

My pump for sure will blow sand all over but I don't think it would be that bad ..its the tropic eden sand the its mixed with reef flakes and the bigger grain don't remember the name.

I really like the look of your scape, had a very balanced appearance and looks well thought out for placement of SPS

In terms of substrate, I keep coming and going on having substrate in my new setup. What are the pros and cons in your situation? Your tank looks great and it looks like you have good coralline algae growth on the bottom glass... in time once your corals fill out the eyes of the viewer will go to them naturally... I would leave it if I were you. But I tough call. I'm undecided on this whole substrate thing (I've never gone BB though).

Thank you that's a big compliment coming from you I always love the look of your tank wish I can get it close to what your tank looked like..the pros of having a BB tank is the ease of controlling nutrient my po4 stays low the highest it got up to was .06 because my skimmer was having issues but it never got higher than that..I don't use anything else for po4 reduction just skimmer, fuge and I was adding zeostart once a week now I don't anymore because it was to low I feed everyday if I don't things turn pale I also like being able to increase the flow as much as I want and what never settle on the bottom gets blown to the overflow. .and also if anything falls it doesn't fall in the sand and get irritated..I like it for those reasons

I like ssb because it looks so much better but it traps all the detritus and in a week there's a lot that can get trapped..I will see then again I always change my mind to what looks good :wildone:

Dan I need your advice buddy. As I mentioned in my thread about a week ago...I want to venture into some sort of hybrid Zeovit system. From the latest pics I posted you can see colours on many corals are good...but not all.

I want to push the brown ones to colour up. I think Zeovit can help with that aspect.

Can you please outline your FULL filtration for me; including all the Zeovit products that you dose. In one of your sump shots I saw a load of Zeovit bottles...but I didnt see that you use the Zeolite stones so I am wondering what your exact hybrid setup is.

I have used Zeovit in the past so I am fully aware of the basic 4 and flow through the Zeolite reactor and that I need to keep water parameters in range.

Thanks in advance my friend. :)

Hello my friend i should be the one seeking your advice..here's a breakdown of the filtration i use
Good skimmer about double the rating for my tank
Sand soaked untill cleared of po4 (tropic eden) or Kz it makes a difference ime
Dead rock that i had cycling for a while and seeded with good liverock
Gfo is on standby just incase but po4 and no3 is 0
Gac passive
I set it up same as i would with zeovit but without the zoelite
I dosed same way with the cycle and also i doubled the bacteria with bacter7 along with zeobac.
All of my zeovit as listed
Bac
Food
Cs
Aa
Xtra
Cv
Start3
Spur2
Sp
My dosing as of now i am still trying to figure out because i am feeding alot to get my nutrient up..
For the other part of filtration is my refugium i think its 40 gallons
Liverock with macroalgae no sand so i can clean up ditritus

For alk ca and mag is through dosing
My tank is still new so stability with proper bacteria is atill building
But i think its starting to get there i am getting growth and things are starting to color back up..

I hope this helps my friend
