Does anyone have long term success with these critters? Are they short term use to get hair algae out? What are the odds of them nuking the tank and can you recover from it? Anyone with past experience who has some good advice please chime in.

To my knowledge I believe they're exactly the same as a regular sea hare.. just smaller and pretty.

I had a 5" sea hare starve to death in my 125 (thought I had hair algae and later discovered it was bryopsis) and I never found the corpse. Nothing happened. Carbon and skimming would take anything out anyway.

Decided to give one a shot, so far I think it a nice addition to my clean up crew.
