ATI spread

Will a 8x39w T5 unit cover a 48x36x20 inch sps reef?

Could possibly add 2x54w on each side as it is going in a canopy?

I don't think the spread will be great in the 36" direction, as an 8 bulb ATI unit is about 17" wide. I have used a 36" fixture on a 48" tank with nice results, so that dimension is fine. You'd be better off using the extra T5s on the front/back or maybe getting a 10 build fixture. Just my opinion.

I could add a 54w on each side

That would probably look very nice and cover the tank well. I'd go for it.
