So I've started plumbing my new 90 gallon build and this is the first time I've ever run a sump and overflow. The sump as you can see is done and built into the stand (55 gallon). I'm using a custom built coast to coast overflow box and the drains are on each end and the return is in the middle. Should my drain at the opposite end go straight down and over to the first chamber or diagonally? Also how will I fit the plumbing for the return in the middle with the drain crossing? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

run the second drain diagonally so the water has less resistance, for the return your gonna have to extend the return plumbing away from the stand till it goes past the drains, only way i can think of

I would change the 90 elbows for 45's, and try to eliminate the horizontal run. Even a short horizontal run can cause problems IME.

make one end and the middle your drain and have the weir finish before the other hole. then use that hole for your return. so, Return / drain/ drain.

as bulldog mentioned any horizontal run will course trouble. you could use flex pvc for the ends into the sump.

and change that ball valve for a gate valve, much more precise turning. do a search for herbie overflow....

So it will not work like that?

It will work fine like you have it. Flexible hose should make return easier, but that's up to you.

Yeah but at the same time I'm using a mag 1800 return pump and splitting the flow to my refugium so I think it will have plenty of power to push it back up to my tank

What you've got will work, for sure. Our recommendations are for maximizing flow, and potential problems with air gaps, etc. in the returns.

Also - make sure you brace the return pipes, that way you don't crack the glass.

As for the valves, I'd drop them entirely on the returns. You don't want the possibility of overflowing your main tank. You want to have an excess of drain, and let the return limit the water level. If you need to raise the water level, then raise the returns, do NOT use the valves. What happens when the valve gets plugged with a snail? You got it, your tank overflows.

I don't really understand what your talking about but these are the drains not returns

I came up with this for my return so it doesn't have to go past the drains and make my tank stick out further from the wall.

My bad. I meant drains. You don't want an overflow by having your drains clogged.

Well what does the valve harm i just used those in case I need to close the flow for cleaning or something

In that case, none. Just make sure the system doesn't overflow if the power goes off, and the valves are open.
