Running into the first problems. I suspect from a new Mag I recently put in the DT. He's was thriving, but woke up this morning and found him like this. I have not clue what happened. Either way, he was removed from the system. May be too late, because it's looking like the one on the LT has caught it.

Just out of curiosity, are you pulling the nem off the rock from the DT and putting it in the HT on an other rock, or are you pulling out the nem together with the rock from the DT to the HT?

I used to have all my rock bonded together. Now they're all loose. I usually take the nem and the rock from the DT and put both into HT. When a mag or gig is sick, don't remove them from the rock unless you absolutely have to. It could be the difference between life and death.

I asked because mine is perched on top of the highest rock, but it would be close to impossible to remove the rock without drastically impacting aquascaping and other inverts. Knock on wood I won't have to move it to the HT anytime soon.

One question though, after dosing with cipro don't you think the rocks might cause issues if placed back in the DT?

I've been PM'ed a few times with that same question. Minh may be able to give a better answer than I can. I'll just tell you what I know from personal experience and observation.

I've had coral, inverts, and fish all survive under heavy antibiotic treatment.

I've never once had an issue putting a rock back in the tank.

Nothing has ever reacted from it as far as I know.

About your rock, if you can't remove it just take the NEM off. The only thing about removing them is that you can cause some trauma.

I remove mine with a very thin butter knife. Once I get under one part of the foot, I work my around. It's a lot easier to have a loose rock that you can hold upside down in the water as you begin to get under the foot to remove him. Then they just fall and slowly sink. 95% of the time, I can remove really easily like that and not cause any damage.

Cipro breaks down in light, doesn't bind the rock like copper. Other antibiotics can be skimmed out, naturally break down or just replaced with water changes.

On that note, please don't dose your DT, the bacterial fallout won't be pleasant. Couple rocks is one thing, wiping out an entire established biological filter is another thing.

True that!

Chemi-clean is a gram negative antibiotic (Erythromycin) that people use for Cyano bacteria in DT. Your sandbed is composed of gram negative bacteria which is why chemiclean works so well. You must read and follow the instructions carefully though. Otherwise, the results could be too good. :-)

Having a good skimmer to handle the sudden dose of biomass is almost a must. You can still have heavy die-off of unwanted bacteria, that will take out your tank from utter biomass if you have an under rated skimmer.

Rule of thumb: Always dose antibiotics in HT/QT and never in your display!!!

So don't have a bunch of the same nems in the DT?

You can have a bunch of mags, but an established tank with stable parameters is key. If one mag gets sick, you should remove immedately. I know for absolute certainty, that Magnifica definetly pass infection to each other. The reason why mine got infected is simple. I had healthy mags that were already fully QT'ed and established I'm my aquarium for months. I got the four new mags, and they looked so good that I decided not to treat. One may have already had infection but wasn't showing signs yet. Just like the pic above. That mag was already infected but still fully inflated. In just 12 hours he was down and completely deflated. I've noticed that when one gets it, it can take 12-48 hours and another one will get it. I'll never add new Magnifica to my tank again without a week of observation in QT. I think they get infection from being stressed and their body cannot fight it off like a healthy NEM can. They are super sensitive and being very careful not to stress them or create any changes in water chemistry will keep them from getting sick IMO. I've noticed that if their size changes enough were you can tell something doesn't look right, they are infected and need to be removed ASAP. The question I'm trying to figure out us if they are showing very minor signs of being sick and I catch it quickly and remove him from the system, will it be quick enough for the infection to not spread to others?

based on the facts that the infection spred among mags and that gigs and mags response quite differently to cipro, it's quite deducible that with different pathogens are gigs and mags infected

Yes, the Gigantea's were still fully inflated and looking great today. This leads me to believe that the gigs are more tolerant to whatever was introduced into the tank, but why?

Why would the Mags get infected and gigs have no problems?

I'm not understanding that. Maybe because the mags were more stressed and weak at fighting off the bacteria.

Actually that couldn't be right because that one in the pic above was looking great the day before he went down. It's definitely some kind of bug that mags can catch and pass around.

Response to treatment or not depends on the bacterial not the anemone. Pathogen in natures tends to be species specific. Bird flu or swine flu are virus that normal does not normally infect human. They have to mutate or change to crossover and infect human. Bacterial infection are less specific but still maybe somewhat species specific.
It is likely that for the strain of bacterial that infect the Mags in your tank are less infectious to the Gig.
Infected Gig tend to pass their infection to other Gig and infected Mag tend to pass their infection to other Mag.

There are likely multiple species of bacterial that infect these anemones. How effective are the various antibiotic depends on the the specific bacterial. All Antibiotic have different spectrum of activity. We do not have the data on the Anemone pathogens, so which antibiotic to use is just guess. IMO, for me, it not quite a shot in the dark but still is far from exact science.

I sure believe that! Those Gig's weren't even phased.

Has to be species specific. I'm just about ready to bring one of these mags over to my lab friends. How and where would be the best place to get a culture?

Got to keep a record bro. Otherwise, I'll forget. If you guys decide to frag one, I expect documentation from you as well. It's not everyday that a mag or gig is fragged. I'm fixing to try a gig. I think it can be done if the animal is well fed, established, and in good health. I'll document that too, but won't bore you guys with another thread. I'll just post the whole thing from day one after it's been 3 months.

I want to provide accurate documentation. If I make a mistake or the NEM doesn't respond to treatment, I'll just be honest and tell you guys. Yes it sucks, but I'm hoping to see some patterns from all of our documentation. We can all learn together.

I don't have anywhere near the experience as some on here, but I do enjoy taking care of, watching, and learning about Magnifica's & Gigantea's. I have kept and treated quite a few Magnifica. Still trying to figure them out. I love these two host anemones. I think it's the difficulty involved. I like challenges.

I appreciate the kind words and hope to provide the most accurate information possible to reference later and learn from as we go.

Cheers!

I think it helps for sure. I've went back and looked at some to try and understand or see when they responded to different antibiotics. That's why I'm dating all of them. Trying to understand these animals and see if there is a pattern with the infections. Let me share a great example of a bleached Mag.

Well guys, I may have killed the frags. They both got sick and I put both of them in a 10/g. I have pictures of one, but the other went in the next day.

So anyway, I treated with Septra first and nothing else. No Cipro. They both perked right up within 24 hours.

Here come the messed up part:

I had recently set my heater to 83 just to see if they liked it more. It was previously 78. Well apparently, the temp swing was too high or the heater didn't shut off properly.

It's a 125W in a 10/G so probably my fault. I believe it's over rated for that tank could have possibly been the cause. I'm not sure.

So yeah, I cooked them. I woke up to take a leak early in the afternoon (work nights) and happen to walk over to the QT's just to make sure everybody was doing ok. Well, the tank was like super cloudy. The day prior, I noticed that one had expelled a ton of brown crap. I thought to myself that this was extremely odd, but didn't realize at that point what the problem was. So I saw the super cloudy tank with 2 deflated anemones that were looking so good previously. I was thinking dang, what happened. So I start to trouble shoot in my head. I happened to look at my $2 thermometer and yeah....was reading low 90's!!!!

I stick my hand in the water and dear God, it felt like a hot tub. I drained the tank immeadetly and added fresh 80 degree DT water. 10 degree difference. May have shocked them pretty bad.

As I left for work, they were both completely deflated and looked pretty bleached. When I cut the flow off, they were still moving and very lively. I'm hoping that they will make it. I played with my lighting and they did inflate a bit a responded.

I can only hope that when I get home they are still alive. I'm hoping to see them inflated. Fingers crossed.

So here's what could be the last pictures of these two. Sorry guys. :-(

After both frags went down from Alleopathy, they have once again survived tx, and one is back in DT.

The other is very light sensitive and can only tolerated a few hours at a time. Too long he deflates bad. Not enough, same thing. He's been very difficult to keep alive.

I'm assuming after both were cooked in 92 degree water, that it will be harder to stablize them until they have fully recovered.

It amazes me how quick they've got their color back. The last bleached mag I had took almost 3 months to get some decent color back.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble, because I am late to this thread.

3 days after cutting this animal in half, it wasn't "eating" because it didn't have an oral cavity. These are very simple creatures that lack a brain. Much of what they do we would consider "reflex" reactions. The reflex to seize a food object is not necessarily related to whether or not the animal has the capacity to ingest the item or digest it. We use terms like "hungry" with these animals when they probably don't have the capacity to feel "hunger". Does a plant feel "thirsty" when it hasn't rained in a few days?

Regardless, we have observed, time and again, that it takes months for these animals to recover from being cut in half - if they recover at all. For some reason, anemones seem to appear healthy immediately after being cut in half, and then usually start a slow decline from which they do not recover. The "danger time" seems to one to two months after being cut in half. If the two halves "survive" after two weeks of being cut apart, it doesn't seem to indicate anything about long term survival. When we use phrases like "so far so good" we really should reserve them for 2 months after cutting the anemone in half. The complete healing of the mouth, column and base has to be seen before we can start to think about breathing a sigh of relief :) You can see in the photos that even one month after cutting neither half has a healed mouth.

I hope these two halves survive, I really do. But it frustrates me to see people doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting different results.

And I wish people wouldn't title their threads with "xyz anemone propagation" unless you already can show one year of survival of both halves. Because otherwise you are just cutting an animal in half. Sorry I don't want to sound like I am flaming anyone and I don't want to get flamed in return, but nothing was done in this case that hasn't been done before, with low success rates.

I don't want to be known as the "anemone propagation troll" but it really bums me out to see thread after thread of people chopping these creatures in half.

I would much rather people focus on triggers to natural asexual reproduction - or the holy grail - sexual reproduction. When you stop to think that there is demand out there for colored S. gigantea at $400 per individual, and each female can release thousands of eggs... Doesn't take a genius to understand that the money is in sexual reproduction, versus cutting a creature in half and waiting 3 months to see if it "might" survive.

I'm glad you're posting again. Seems like you've been away for quite a while, too long IMO. When it comes to chopping up nems, I can only pound it in people's heads so much, then they ignore me. It literally takes an army of us telling them it's not possible for them to pause. Unfortunately, it's usually only a short pause because those who want to do it, will do it no matter what we tell them.

:deadhorse:

I completely agree that sexual reproduction is the way to go with gigantea in particular. Unfortunately, I can only name a handful of people who have had multiple gigs prior to a couple of years ago, and of those people, I only know of one person who actively attempted to have her gigs reproduce and she was unsuccessful. Now that we have quite a few folks with multiple gigs, I hope we see some progress. I can't wait to see a thread where someone posts photos of baby gigs. We've got a lot to learn though. I've only recently seen what I would consider to be baby gigs. I think the big challenge is being able to determine the sex of the gig. With males it's obvious, but not so much with females.

Back on the topic of mags, I doubt we'll see much progress in terms of sexual reproduction. Like BTAs, because they can also reproduce through cloning, it's much more likely that they'll just clone in a captive environment. I've seen eggs in BTAs, but nothing ever transpired.

I would much rather people focus on triggers to natural asexual reproduction - or the holy grail - sexual reproduction. .

You may be the one to ask... Do the newly released baby gigs, or any nem, but I'm interested in gig reproduction, do you know if the new released babies need special care? Any special "settling out" requirements? Reason I ask, after I added my last group, I may have seen a few little ones, the size of a grain of rice, but wasn't able to get them to attach or stay put, it seemed the current was too strong for so small. I captured one, put it inside an API test tube, but it melted by the next day into a blob, my guess was no current or blasted with light, I'm not sure. Any insight you have on young gig releases? Any special requirements you're aware of?

Sorry for the derail Jared, we miss you!

This is the only photo I could get, and you can't even tell it's in the bottom.

I'm computer stupid, so I can't circle or point to where it was. You can't see it in the photo anyway. I landed one on the rock it's leaning on too. It disappeared, I think the current was too strong.

I noticed this, the week I got rear ended sitting at a stop light (I think I added them the week before stupid hit me. Car totaled.) I had major whiplash, and I'm still dealing with spinal cord damage, 4 months later. I've thought about getting out all together since, but it's hard to walk away from what I have now, but I have gotten rid of most of my corals the last few weeks. At the time I noticed them, I was in no condition to do anything much. It hurt to bend down to look in my tank, let alone hunch over and try catching those things.

I'm glad you're posting again. Seems like you've been away for quite a while, too long IMO.

I've been busy :) But I never stay away for too long :)

I don't even know anyone who has seen them spawn! If you did, you are the first I have heard about.

The only person that I am aware of that raised them did so in an open raceway that was filled with macroalgae and was in full tropical sunlight. Apparently the babies were filtered out of the water (or settled) on the algae. They were said to be very small and look like hydra.

"Timeout"?

If you break the rules of the site, depending on the infraction, the Moderators may give you a verbal warning, may give you a timeout, or may ban you outright. I have no idea what happened nor is it any of my business. Timeout just means he can't post for a while, but then he'll be back.

Ok. Wasn't sure if it was site related or real life. Thanks.

Sometimes real life gets in the way too. I posted quite a bit in the first couple of years of being on RC; then gave up on the hobby for over four years, before coming back a little over a year ago. Stuff happens!
