Adding NH3OH to get 1.5+ppm NH4 reading. Processed to 0 in a day twice. But getting substantial stink. What's the exact cause? The gas? Anyone know?

Question 2: how much "food" such as pellets is needed to keep the bacteria alive after fully cycled and prior to adding CUC etc.

Ammonia itself stinks

also if there are living things pre-ammonia addition, the ammonia will result in dying things. Dying things decompose and bad smells arise from putrefaction. (you can read about putrefaction on wikipedia)

also, post cycle, your bio capacity in your tank should equal the demand the inhabitants you are about to add need. The nitrifying bacteria in your tank need to be able to handle the next addition you make, therefore in theory if you are feeding the empty tank the same amount of food you would be feeding fish number one, then when you add fish number one your nitrifying bacteria will already be up to date, and your tank will be able to handle that fish with no "mini cycle".
