You really need much more wattage to grow well, which is what gives the stronger photosynthesis (filtering).

I'd guess you need at least 5 watts of LED.

i thought the bml had 16 watts and was pretty powerful. i could also add two lights

You might be right... looked again and it says 18 watts.

I've never used one but some folks in my local club do and say they work just fine.

I'm not sure on the cost but I imagine it's more expensive than a clamp on light with a daylight spectrum cfl flood light.

there very expensive for refugium lights. im not afraid of the cost if the would do great on the macro, but your club members saying they do just fine isnt very encouraging or the prais i was hoping to hear. i might have to look into other options.

IMHO a great fuge light for growing macro is the most powerful white Par 38 LED you can get from Home Depot stuck in a cheapo clamp lamp.
