So here's the deal. I was given a Reef Octopus NWB-150 as a gift. My tank is a 29g which I am in the process of adding a 20g sump to, bringing total volume around 45-49g.

What are some opinions on the predicament I am in? Run the skimmer (oversized skimmer is better than no skimmer viewpoint) or just run the system without a skimmer but still add the sump for more volume?

I do plan on upgrading to a 75g within a year so I do not want to sell the skimmer and downsize.

If you've got the space, I would run the skimmer. It would be a shame to see it sitting in the corner collecting dust.

I have that skimmer on my frag system that has 2 clown fish and about 50 gallons total volume. I would use it.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Glad I can use it and not let it collect dust like mentioned above :)

I have a 29 gallon with ~15 gallon (custom) sump and I'm running a Bubble Magus Curve 5, which is rated for 140 gallons, close to you NWB150. So far it has been working great! I've always heard that it's not possible to over-skim...

I'd run the skimmer.

If you are running a skimmer that size in such a small tank you can strip it too clean of bio material and starve your corals. Make sure you feed well and dont be afraid to put it on a timer.

Just set the skimmer on a timer. It wont need to run all the time being its so big.
