I understand that the best time to get a skimmer is ASAP but I'm trying to put off the expense a bit. My DT details are below. The current inhabitants are 2 small OC clowns, 2 skunk cleaner shrimp and a CUC of snails. There is also a purple firefish in QT that will be added to the DT in 4 weeks.
Thanks!

How large a tank? And without any fish, the need to skim is low. Remember to feed the shrimp until you have a fish

Many people run a skimmerless system especially in as yours is now just fish only. I would not worry about it until you have some coral. Of course I am assuming you do have good filtration and or liverock?

It's time to add the skimmer when water changes alone are not enough for you to keep up with good water quality, particularly with nitrates and phosphates. A skimmer will also help oxygenate your water.

If its any consolation I have been running my tank for almost 7 months now. I have a fairly well stocked tank with mostly Lps and a few sps and I have no skimmer. I'm not saying dont get one, I'm just saying its not going to kill you not to have one at the start. My stuff is all showing great growth as well.
