I have 1" drains for my tank, after the bulkhead should i increase the drain to 1.5? if so why? couldn't i just use 1" through out the system? my returns are 3/4". and then my next question is, what pump should I buy for the return?

my tank is a custom 65x30x24 with two 3/4 inch return and a bean animal 1" size drain. i'm looking for something as quiet as possible.

You can use 1 inch all the way and that is what I'm planning for my 75 gallon. 1 inch pipe can handle 1700+ gallons per hour flow at full siphon from an overflow to a sump. Plenty of flow available. I'm planning on buying a fluval SP4 pump. Also, 1.5 inch true union ball valves are HUGE.

I think you will be fine with 1" for the primary and 'backup' siphon drains; I'd be inclined to put 1 1/2 PVC on the overflow side of the dry emergency.

An almost endless list of potential pumps depending upon whether internal or external. If quiet is your goal then probably internal.

1" is fine, ran three one inch drains on my 60g and the emergency drain never saw water. As ca1ore mentioned so many pumps to choose from. I really liked the Tunze silence I ran, as the name states it is pretty silent. Also the Ehiem are a solid pump with little noise.

Ehiem 1262 is their largest pump and it can't handle the drain then if its over 900 gph. I would have to get a sicce 5.0

On the Bean drain system, the full siphon can be adjusted.

I know that. But if I can force more gph through why would I limit myself with a small pump

My mistake, I read your post as if you thought you had to find a big enough pump to meet full potential of the drain.
