So about 2 days ago i made my first batch of salt water using reef crystals and Rodi water.

Water being held in 55 gallon plastic drum. Held salt water in there before for about a week, no problems.

I put a heater in the drum yesterday anticipating doing my water change, never got to it, left heater in.

Tonight took a look at my salt water in drum, and there are tiny brown specs everywhere. Actually looks like the diatoms that i recently bloomed in my DT.

I used the heater when i was acclimating my puffer, which was in the same water that had the rock that started the diatom bloom.

I thought i cleaned the heater well enough, but im thinking thats the source and possibly the ID.

Ammonia, nitrite amd nitrates all read zero.

Can i use this water? Should i dump it?
If i put it in, is my tank going to become COVERED in algae almost overnight?

Has anyone had this happen?? Any help greatly appreciated.

Ok so ive done some more research and found that it is a common occurence with reef crystals salt mix, and in fact not algae.
Said to be harmless. Some say possibly beneficial. Just gets all over your mixing equipment
