Should I just expect every fish from a LFS to have ich anymore or just change the purchasing location? I know it is very common. I am just curious what a realistic expectation is.

QT all fish. assume all fish have some parasite.
I personally QT all fish, treat them all with Prazipro. then observe them long term in QT before transferring to DT.
In some ich magnet species like Tangs i definitely treat them with either copper or hypo.

They have been in QT it showed up in week 4, just disappointing. I was looking forward to transfer them next week and get a new member of the family. Now I have to treat and hold again. Then get the pleasure of sanitizing the QT tank.

2 for 2 is very high IMHO. Certainly qt all fish, but I haven't actually had to treat a new fish for at least the past 5 years. I do use a LFS that quarantines their fish for two weeks before they are placed in their floor tanks. I would look for another fish store if one is available to you. It's worth paying more if you can avoid treatment.

i wouldn't trust any LFS to quarantine for me sicne they have so much turn over it's impossible to get all the diseases out before they sell the fish. I would quarantine my fish using prazi pro, and if you think it's ich you should either CP, copper, hypo or use the TT method. I heard TT is good and fast it allows you to get your fish in the DT in 2 weeks after 5 transfers. But TT won't treat for brook or velvet.

+1, I probably should have been clearer on response. I wasn't advocating trusting a fish store's QT process; you should still always quarantine all new purchases. If you are lucky enough like me to have a LFS that does quarantine their fish I would use that store as much as possible even if their prices are higher than other local stores. Here is So Cal we are lucky to have numerous stores to choose from, some have terrible procedures in dealing with fish, others do as good of a job as the trade permits. Choosing the best store will save you time and trouble in the long run.

Excuse my ignorance but what is TT, I did not see it on the list. Or am just having a brain cloud.

TT is tank transfer. there is a thread, i believe, in the disease forum on how to do this. it's easy peasy, a little time consuming but still a great way to eliminate ich.

TT is Tank Transfer method of ridding fish of Ich without using Hypo or Copper. Basically you setup two temporary (12 day) QT's. Many people use totes for this purpose. Every 3 days you transfer the fish to the other bin, then clean, disinfect, and air dry the tote for 24 hours before refilling it for the next transfer. It takes just 12 days, and there is an entire Sticky here on how to complete it properly. Once you finish the TT you keep your fish in your regular QT to observe them for any other illness.

I recommend tank transfer method as well. After reading the thread dedicated to it, I was well prepared and executed for the first time without issue the passed 2 weeks. Fish are now in my cycled QT and doing great! Going to start Prazi today.
