View Full Version : Broken RLSS DC5000

I bought a Waveline DC5000 pump a little more than a year ago. It no longer works. When power is applied, it spins for a second, then stops. The pump is totally clean, and the controller seems to be fine. I emailed RLSS and was pretty much given the "tough luck, it's out of warranty, buy a new GEN2 pump" spiel, which I refuse to do. Is there NO way to fix these things? This is not the first I have read of them failing in this fashion (spin one sec, then off), so, it must be a common failure. Is it something internal in the pump, or, is it the controller that is messed up?

As an aside, the Eheim 1262 I replaced with this pump had been running 10 years without a hiccup, and, is of course, now back on the tank, running like a champ.

Personally if it happens to mine I would take it to Radio Shack or an electronics supply place & try a new power supply 1st before condemming the motor itself.

use the Eheim.

Already tried that...I have a DC6000 on my other tank. I opened up the controller box, and, there are 3 wires that lead to the pump. Two of them are the + and - from the power supply. The other appears to be something that varies the speed of the pump, as that wire comes off of what I am assuming is capacitor. Does it stand to reason that there is also a chip inside the pump motor block that this wire acts upon?

I am not versed in electronics so someone else would be better to answer that question.

After much research, there is a chip inside the pump that fails. The Gen2 pumps moved this chip into the controller box, so, if it goes bad, you just need a new controller. So, the pump is doorstop now.

Sorry to hear that. I had heard the gen 1 pumps had this issue. I have two of the gen 2 pumps and so far they have been running good with no issues. Maybe waveline might give you a discounted price on a gen 2 pump being they know they had issues with the first gen. At least worth sending them a message about it.

are the pumps labeled as gen 1 gen 2 from the manufacturer?I just ordered a new skimmer with that pump and haven't received it yet.

The model numbers are how you tell what gen they are. I believe all the gen 2 pumps are models DC4000, 6000, and 12000

The gen 2 uses the same pump motor as the original 3000, 5000, & 10,000.

Well I will have a warranty at least.

I was unaware there is a gen 3 pump only the gen 2's?

I was unaware there is a gen 3 pump only the gen 2's?Correct there is technically no gen 3. It is a complete redesign with different model numbers.

O okay wasn't sure. I just know the gen 2 pumps have the chip that failed on the gen 1's located in the controller know instead of in the pumps. So if it does fail then all you need to buy is a new controller and your back up and running again. My dc4000 pumps have the newer controller with the 30 min feed timer vs the old controller with the 15 min feed timer.
