Secret to good reef pics?

I really want to take some good pictures of my tank but my cell phone just doesn't make the pics look good at all. So I bought a Nikon D3200 HD-SLR camera with a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro Lens.

Anyone have any experience with this camera and lens and will it be a lot better for reef pics?

That's a nice camera to own, but even with an iPhone, a simple photo editing app allowing you to adjust white balance or "temperature" as it is called on a few, will work wonders. Aviary for iPhone is a simple free and easy to use app that can tame the blue or cure the wash out without getting buried in settings. Camera+ is a little more powerful with more options, but it's easy to overdo it and isn't as user friendly. Simply tweaking the temperature and saturation sliders on Aviary I can make any iPhone pic I take look absolutely true to life. I don't try to over shop my pics. Just make them look natural

I know a lot of people use a plexi box allowing them to put the lens down into the water

Nice, you just can't beat a good dslr for the much larger sensor and better glass.
Download Lightroom so you can really makes some good adjustments. Shoot in RAW and you'll be shocked how much you can improve the shot afterwards.
