I've been trying to plan out what fish I want to get for my first saltwater system and I was wondering if I get one semi-aggressive fish should I stick with other fish of the same aggression level? I wouldn't want to put a docile fish in with a more agressive fish if it would bully it. I'm also not sure if multiple semi-agressive fish will just result in them killing each other. I know there are the fish compatability charts on liveaquaria but I don't really trust that or lfs anymore. When I set up my first freshwater aquarium at 13 all I had to go off of was the guy at the store and he steered me in the wrong direction. He sold me all of my fish including an angel that killed everything. Therefore I would rather rely on the experience of others in the hobby. I appreciate any insight given.

The liveaquaria compatability chart is spot on. We often refer to it here.

List your planned stocking so we can advise.

I'm not sure of my stocking list yet. I only have a 29g tank, but I know I want a clown. Other then that I know I like bright colors, so any suggestions?

I would suggest a pair of juvenile OC clowns and maybe a royal gramma to start. Both bright colored and easy to care for. Then maybe a firefish or a clown goby.

I like peaceful tanks.
Look at the goby/shrimp combinations, really pretty and fascinating.

I really like the randall's prawn goby, but I hear they mostly hide in their burrows all of the time.

Would a yellow dottyback do well?

I had a pair of Randalls for quite a while with a shrimp.
They were out all the time.

I guess it probably differs from fish to fish, huh? I think I may look at one of them then. When they are out do the mainly stay near the bottom of the tank? I would like to get fish that spend their time at different levels of the water column.
