So it begins. I have lived in a second floor apartment for the 5 years that I have been in the hobby and I finally moved to a house! I have kept a 58 gallon clam and sps dominated tank, as well as a 40 breeder mixed reef. About a month before I moved, my tank succumbed to a bacterial infection and wiped out my sps and lps corals, I was left with only my clams and zoas. Here is a picture of my 58 before the crash.
http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0181_1.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0181_1.jpg.html)
http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0213_1.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0213_1.jpg.html)

I decided now that I have moved I want to build a bigger tank. Since I love clams and I plan to grow my small herd I wanted a 24" front to back rather than the 18" I had. I decided a 180 wide 72"x24"x25" would be the perfect tank. Once decided I was able to order the Marineland 180 with corner overflows and the build officially began!

The tank is in!

I have always wanted to have a steel stand and maximize space under my tank so I decided to build my own. With the help of a few friends off to the steel yards we went.
http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0088.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0088.jpg.html)

I decided to go with .125 wall 1.5" square tubing. This stuff is heavy and should support a tank lol. The stand was built to the footprint of the tank 72.5"x24.5" and 39" tall. The stand was also built with 6 adjustable feet to level the stand.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0100.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0100.jpg.html)

After much debate I decided against powder coating the stand due to cost and went with primer and a garage door 2 part epoxy.
http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0213.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0213.jpg.html)

I was able to get the garage floor epoxy tinted to a nice blue color to be different.

What was the price for the steel stand . Powercoating vs epoxy materials? Thanks

ghellin
07/19/2014, 05:06 PM
I paid about $200 for steel I had 20' extra for other projects, $10 for primer, and $75 for the epoxy. Of course welding supplies, grinding wheels etc were incidental costs. Power coating was going to be $250+ from what I was able to find so not worth it to me.

Sump time. I want a bigger refugium at least 10% of tank volume so I decided to go with a 75 gallon sump. Since I want to be different and do a Refugium>Skimmer>Return style sump I decided a typical 75 with center brace would get in my way. So I had a custom braceless 75 gallon tank built by Planet Aquariums as it was only $40 more tha than a typical 75 with brace that I would have to cut out. The 75 is heavy thick glass I love it!
Going through the required cat scan.

Refugium section is 19.25"x17.125"x16" (23 gallons.) The skimmer section is 15.75"x17.125"x12" (14 gallons.) Return is 8.5"x17.125"x12" (7.5 gallons)http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx12/ghellin/IMAG0203.jpg (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/ghellin/media/IMAG0203.jpg.html)

I would humbly like to suggest that the cut outs in the wood for the bulkheads should be larger.
In case you need to work on them from underneath.

Thanks for the advice, before I finished the oak I put it up to the bottom of the tank to check for clearance. I was able to adjust and tighten bulkheads comfortably. I think they just appear smaller in the picture.

Finished painting the sump, white walls for the fuge and black on the back and far left side. Also picked up an 18 gallon tank for my ATO.

ghellin
08/04/2014, 08:32 PM
Thanks! A store called aquariums in Edmond, ok. She ordered them from a company called Ocean View. I was told they are no longer making them, but I wouldn't think it would be too expensive for a custom tank.

Thank you both very much!

As this is a slower build and the wood facade will not be on my short list, I needed a temporary canopy to hold lights and also let me start planning how I want to build the canopy when that time comes. $35 in pvc and it is solid as a rock.

Second pic is with a little DIY sump light with a few NW and RB Cree LEDs.

Rock has been going for a 2 weeks now. Good mix of flat shelf Marco, Tonga branch, and miscellaneous. All rock was purchased dry or dried by me to ensure no pests. I plan to have 2 large rock structures with am open valley in the center. So all this rock may not get used in the display.

So the stock Marineland returns have a anti siphon hole in them to reduce the amount of water that flows back in the sump in a power outage. Well they squirt water everywhere, so I found a free solution. I used a mag pump prefilter and cut two 1/2" rings to still allow air flow but keep splashing to a minimum. Will be easy to slide down into the water to keep clean as well.

Time for rock, I used hydro stop cement to construct the two pieces. There will be two main structures in the tank. Here is the left side.

Thanks! No new equipment yet have to get this tank up and cycled first so I can break down my other tanks. I am looking at the maxspect rip tide for flow.

Tank is still a little noisy but once I get the proper return pump I should be able to make some adjustments to quiet it down.

Today's update. Rock is in the tank!

I was able to score some awesome Marco Rock prime cuts from MACNA via Paul @ HighDefCorals. Decided the back glass looked a little empty but I did not want to loose real estate since this is where my herd of clams will reside.

Cycle is nearing completion so I will soon start my tank transfer process to get my fish moved over. Tank transfer should take 17-20 days for one or two fish at a time.

But while I have been waiting I added some cheap LEDs to the underside for fun effects, they have a nice 44 button remote all for about $25 on Amazon. They are RGB LEDs so almost any color is possible.

Following along.

I see you are in Edmond; I am in SW OKC and starting my own 258g tank at my office (72.5"x30.5"x27") from Planet. I am a couple months behind your build (PA just now getting started on the tank build).

I noticed you went with a 39" stand; I am going with 32", but maybe I need to request a taller one. I also want to go with a glass sump similar to yours. Which skimmer are you using and how much clearance do you have? One of my biggest concerns with sump selection is being able to service the skimmer.

ghellin
09/24/2014, 08:42 PM
Right now I have a reef octopus xs160 skimmer that is getting me by until I can find a super reef octopus 3000 int. with my water volume I should have a few inches of clearance. 39" was important to me as I hate looking down into a tank. Now the tank is right at eye level for me.

Reactors are from Synergy, I bought them locally through Paul @ highdefcorals. PM me if you need his contact info he is here in NW OKC.

I am having a dosing container built as of now and I already have 2 dosers installed under the tank on the back board above the Return pump. I need to add a 3rd and possibly 4th for other options. I have an Apex that will fit up under there as well.

Nice setup. Great work also.

Question on the Coralux 5up ldd driver boards since I've never seen them. I am actually using them with a pair of borealis luxeon array's but ordered them with the wires rather than the pins :( Does the 5up board work with the wired version of LDD's vs. the pin?

Also - I like the old power supply trick. That was a great idea and one I'll borrow if you don't mind :)

ghellin
11/10/2014, 01:14 AM
Thanks! The wired ldd drivers would not be friendly. The boards have headers that the ldd drivers plug into. If you have the wired ones you could possibly strip the wires back a bit and try to plug the wires into their respective socket. May work, but it's not designed that way as you know.

Lighting is DIY LEDs and T5. This will be packed with clams and corals so color is very important to me. Right now I am using a mag9.5 return until I buy a fluval SP6 or DC pump. Plumbing is a 1.5" WYE that feeds 3 1" lines. 2 1" returns to the tank and the 3rd feeds my reactor manifold.

I am going to do my wood work that is why I am dragging my feet. Frankly I am scared of messing it up lol. But I suppose come January I will get started on it. I have it mostly designed in my head, now to get it actually done is the trick. I will do the Canopy first as it will be easier to do. Should be 3 doors on the front and one on each side. The stand will be 3 pieces that will be held in place by magnets to the steel frame.

Move air across the top, the heat sinks will sit flush to the inside top of the canopy to keep the majority of the radiating heat out of the canopy. I will add a small clip fan to the top of the canopy that moves significant amounts of air quietly. should all be hidden from below :)

Hopefully, I will be able to add corals starting this week.

Once corals have been moved over I will be able to move my apex over to the 180 and set up the BRS dosers I have. I have been dosing the 58 manually for the last few months and I need a break lol.

Had a good friend (an electrician) stop by today and help me install a separate 20A drop with a GFCI outlet right behind the sump. Now I can split the load between two breakers and never worry about an overload. I will plug one EB8 into each circuit so the apex stays powered if either trips.

I had a dedicated outlet like this installed when I had the COMAS frag tank. It was suggested to me by a member to protect the outlet from splashes and such by using the type of cover used for outdoor patio outlets. They have a cover that swings open for easy access and keeps moisture out. Works on my back yard patio and worked on the tank.

I was just about to suggest the same thing.

Also, any of your OKC reefers thinking at all about these earthquakes we've been having? I happened to be watching my tank yesterday when that 4.3 happened in Guthrie, and I noticed odd ripples on the surface. I'm in SW OKC, so that's a good ways away. Did anyone else notice anything?

Lynn that is a great suggestion I will look for a water resistant cover.

Oh yes I felt the 4.3 very well and ran straight to the tank. It did not really move the water much, but I am glad we went with .125 steel over .0625!

Received my new Fluval SP4 pump last night and all I can say is wow! This thing is big and moves a lot of water! This pump replaces the mag 9.5 that is rated @ 93 watts for 950 GPH. The Fluval moves at least twice the water and is rated @ only 88 watts. I have to also say this pump is very quiet and makes almost no audible noise outside my stand even without doors! I am impressed to say the least!

This pump feeds a 1.5" wye, that sends two 1" lines back the the tank and the 3rd is a feed to the manifold with four 1/2" feeds. The top of the tank is about 65" and I have no issues with head pressure. The two return lines in the tank each break into two 3/4" Locline outputs.

As a type, I'm watching some ominous clouds roll in, so I've really started thinking about DR.

What are you doing in regards to generators, chillers, etc.? I have a "portable" generator at home; I'm not sure my wife will be happy if I sacrifice the freezers and tank at home (as well as A/C and TV) to save the tank at the office.

Plus, I'm not sure what I'll do about the warmer evenings this summer.

I plan to pick up a generator this summer, Hopefully...

Fortunately getting down to one tank is helping to relieve me of many stresses and work. I don't have a chiller and have not planned on needing one as we generally keep the house very cool. I rely mostly on fans/evap to reduce heat when it becomes an issue.

Also I hope to be getting a new AC in the house later this spring which would help ease some concerns.

I have to admit I got the idea from Dr. Paul Whitby so I can't take the credit! But I will say that if i ever do one again a tub will be used. Clean up was easy as can be. I closed the gate valve to the fuge and drained the entire section like for a water change. scooped out the sand and pulled the container. Filled it back up with fresh saltwater and opened the valve. never even had to kill the return pump.

I ran the DSB for 6 months and the sand at 1" depth smelled like fresh sand with zero detritus. I am not sure how effective it was, but now with my skimmer and water change habits I imagine i will not have any nutrient issues. All my tanks seem to end up as ultra low nutrient systems unfortunately. My plan is to simply fill the sump with as much live rock as I can and depend on LR for denitrification.

The Achilles was not a fan of the bigger Chevron for a solid 3 days. But after heavy feedings the aggression went away and the 3 tangs (Chevron, Achilles, and Sailfin) are all happy and mostly hang together. I plan to add a Blonde naso at some point and I will take more caution and use an in tank acclimation box. The Naso will be larger (I hope) so that should also help. Nice! I'm waiting on the battery backup. I've got it hooked up to a UPS right now but that wont last nearly as long as what they'll provide.

Checked the aquarium the other night and my 12+ inch durasa started spawning.

Not the easiest thing to see, but about every 2 minutes the clam would close and fill my tank full of a nice white cloud....

A few years back when I had my 58 I was changing rocks around and 3 of my 4 clams spawned and filled my poor tank full of the most disgusting goo....

Pretty awesome video.

I got the battery backup ordered now for the gyre. Looking at getting another gyre now that I have them protected from shredding up my anemones or getting jammed up with any small critter.

If you haven't seen it yet here's a thread I created to make protection sleeves

Thanks Jason. It happened again the other night as well. My two coris wrasses spawned every few weeks like clockwork.

Actually it's now attached. It's just a slip fit Facade that hugs the stand very tightly.

looks like system is stable and you are starting to get some pretty good growth.

what are you looking to add for stocking?

ghellin
11/24/2015, 05:00 PM
It really is taking off. I can see new growth daily. Still sucking up the calcium at a steady rate though. I am surprised I haven't had to increase much yet....

I still want to add a Blonde Naso and a few different wrasses but that should really be all the livestock. I need to add to my CUC and just keep adding corals for now and hopefully keep the parameters as stable as possible. I finally added a new ATI Blue+ T5 and removed a the old 6000K bulb I had in there. Money has been tight lately so slow is the only option lol.

Now that is has been almost a month and the new baby is doing great, its back to the tank. Newly added T5 retro fits. Two 80 watt bulbs, I plan to use ATI blue+ bulbs when I get money again lol.

Do you have any heat issues in the canopy or have any kind of venting?

ghellin
01/10/2016, 06:12 PM
I don't have any fans or vents but there really are no heat issues at all. The LED heatsinks drop in from the top so most the heat from the LEDs just radiates upward. The T5s do heat the canopy air a bit but it really has little effect on the tank temp. I keep my house at 72℉ in the summer and the tank has never hit 80℉.
