Bio Pellet Options for a sumpless system

Hello fellow reefers,

I want to try to run bio pellets to reduce my nitrates so that I'm not as dependent on water changes.

Can I run them in another bag inside my fluval? I'm assuming not because from what I read you need low flow.

If not, what are my options without setting up a sump (I don't have room in my stand). My aquamaxx JUST fits behind my tank. I saw reef octopus makes a HOB option but its too wide and requires a big pump inside the tank. Are there any other options?

Any suggestions for alternate ways to reduce nitrates besides water changes?

Equipment: 55 gallon with a aquamaxx hob-xc and a fluval 405 (no sponges, used as additional flow with a bag of carbon and ecophos), less than 4" behind the tank.

Innovative marine has a reactor that has a pump built in underneath. That's better than having a seperate pump suction cupped to the inside glass with tubing to feed the reactor. The tubing will grow nasties over time. Same as most hob accessories

You could try a liquid carbon source, i.e. vodka or vinegar.
