As the title said. I just wanted to share my new tank that I set up today. The tank is a 220 gallon euro braced with external overflow. I had it made by coast to coast aquariums. The metal stand was also made by them and the too is at 40 inches. So I don't have to bend over to watch my tank like most stands. It will be lit by an ATI Powermodule hybrid 48" that's 8x54w and 3x75w led which is currently over my 90 gallon but was bought for this tank. It has been 6 months in the planning. The 65 gal sump is still being built by Marc Levenson from Melves Reef. My plans are sps dominant like my current tank. 286098286099286100286101286103

Got a few toys.
Lifereef VS3-30 rated for 400 gal
286156286157
Nextreef MR1 reactor for gfo
2-MP60's and 2-MP40's
Sicce Syndra 10.0 return pump rated 2500 gph. And the tool that is going to make it all happen........ My ladder 😉
Luckily I live about 45 min from a Savko store. Might make it there today to get started on the durso standpipes. Still have a month or so for my sump to arrive before that can be started.

Does anyone know how or if it's even possible to change the Topic/Headliner at the top? I wasn't going to do a build thread but thinking now that maybe I should've and would like to. I'd hate to start a new thread with all the same pics :headwally: On another note, yesterday my buddy and I reinforced my basement ceiling. This tank is on the second floor over a finished basement. There is an 12x12 steel beam running along each side of the tank about a foot from each end and only 3-2x10 braces in between under the tank as pictured.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/03/ajuqegy4.jpg
We got 8-2x10 LVL's which are 4 times stronger than wood, cut them to the correct length(8 ft) took out all the surrounding ceiling tiles and "fished" them up there one at a time. We then used construction adhesive to stick them to the preexisting braces, drove shims under each side that sits on the steel beam to bring them up tight to the floor. To hold them all together perfectly we ran 3' screws along the whole pieces every foot or so. We added two extra stand alone braces(4 LVL's for each) in between the existing braces.

I now feel more comfortable about the tank staying on the right floor of the house.😬

Worked on scape last night and this morning. I'm going to let it set for a few days and keep looking at it just to make sure that's how I want it before I attach it all together using the emarco mortar. The tarp is the length of the tank and the highest point of the structure is 15". Let me know what you think it if I could change it to make it better.

Awesome tank. Can't wait to see the progress. What are the tank dimensions? I have 96x24x30 which sits 42" off the floor. While I love the look, maintenance (particularly dealing with corals on the sand bed, can be a PITA. I use a 5ft ladder, and sometimes goggles as I have to stick my head partially in water to reach the bottom. I know that one day I will end up with some broken bones from falling off the ladder as I have had many close calls. Here is an older FTS and fish room pics of my setup.

It's 60x28x30. I have a 6 ft step ladder but I don't plan on wearing goggles aka snorkeling in my tank. 😉However the father in law did buy my a sweet dive knife just to be a smarta$$. I changed the left side of my scape a little this evening and am patiently waiting for my sump that was suppose to be in the mail by Friday so hopefully I get it shortly so I can start working on the plumbing.

I need help deciding on my drain system. It's either going to be durso standpipes or the herbie. I have 2-1.5" drains and 2-1" returns.

bmullikin1
08/29/2014, 02:22 PM
nice tank, like the rockwork, would go w the herbie drain system, for safety i would use the 2 1" holes for the main drains and use the 1.5s for the emergency drains, as you already have returns drilled in the back of the tank its that simple.

CoopsReef

Thanks for the quick reply. Does using the herbie slow down the turnover rate through the sump? Since I have 2 drains logic tells me that it would be cut in half since only one drain is being constantly used. Am I correct with this thinking?

A Herbie (full siphon) 1.5 drain with a tank to sump water height of 4ft could flow 4,000+ gph.

A Mag 24 with 5ft of head can only push 1600 gph.

a single siphon drain will not be an issue. In fact you will need a valve on the drain to let the return pump keep up.

Very helpful thank you. From the chart sicce has on the 10.0 I will have roughly 1900 gph if I had my gate/ball valve wide open. Still haven't decided. I'm glad to hear it won't be a problem as I currently have a durso on my 90 gal and was dreading the noise of having approximately 3x the flow.

Here is a pic of the ceiling above my tank where I will be putting in 2 winches mounted to the existing ceiling. I made this to fit perfectly under neath the winches to match. There will be 2 holes for the wires to my ATI 8 bulb Powermodule Hybrib to go through so nothing is visible and I can have my lights go up and down by a cordless remote😉. Just needs to be stained yet. Hope you like it.

Look where I went yesterday.
290976

Finished my overflow. Does this look right? The main drain is 6" below the overflow intake and the emergency drain is 1/2" below the intake. From what I've read and believe this will keep the water level 1/2-3/8" below the overflow intake which means the water will not have far to fall which in turn will keep it quiet? Sorry for the low quality pics. It's pretty tight squeeze getting behind the tank.

Unfortunately I didn't get a few pieces that I needed so I made a special trip to Lowes last night. They only carry white PVC so I painted them and am currently waiting for them to dry. Another trip to Savko would have probably been easier but I wouldn't be able to make it there until next weekend due to work and it's 1.5 hrs each way.

Love the winches. Did you get them directly from Sun Winch or a supplier? Can you give us a link to the manufacturer? What about the controller, does it come with the winches or sold separately? I'm thinking of purchasing an ATI Powermodule soon and would love to attach them as you have done. Great job.

Thank you. The controller/remote is sold separately. Here is a link to Amazon where they are cheaper.

They are controlled separately from each other but are able to be synced. You can sync up to 8 winches with 1 controller.

Well tank is full. I'm going with ESV salt(same as current tank). I wasn't sure exactly how many gallons I actually have in my system so I mixed the 4 part ESV salt as if I had 250 gallons to start with a rough estimate and my salinity came to 1.029. I'm not worried about the alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium because I can adjust those with the ESV 2 part. I took out 15 gallons of saltwater and put 15 gallons of RO/DI water back in. Now I have 1.028 so I will do the same thing tomorrow to at least get it close before adding the Dr. Tims bacteria and ammonia chloride to start the cycle. I've also realized that Vortech Mp40's do not have the same amount of power on 3/4" glass since that's their max so tomorrow I should receive the 2 Tunze 6095's with the magnet extension that I ordered. The herbie overflow seems to work awesome. I have shut the return pump off several times to check it and it works flawlessly every time so far.

CoopsReef
10/14/2014, 04:43 PM
Took out 15 more gallons of saltwater and replaced it with ro/di water and I am now at 1.025. Added the Dr. Tims bacteria and 11.5ml of ammonia chloride which is exactly what the math came to to bring the tank to 2ppm ammonia. I will continue to follow the directions and test tomorrow to see what my ammonia and nitrite numbers are. I also added the 2 tunze 6095 nanostream power heads tonight. For as small as they are they really push some water, 2510 gph to be exact. Now I continue to play with the pacific sun kore 5th doser to try and figure it out. I'm not sure if it's complicated to use or if it's user error 😉

Here's a photo for this evening.

Haven't posted lately for being busy and just waiting on it to cycle. Today ammonia was 0, nitrites 1ppm and nitrates 20ppm. I'm well on my way. Tomorrow if nitrates are down to .50ppm or so I will add another 11.5 ml of ammonia chloride. In the mean time I ordered and received my ato container from Melves reef to match my sump. It's 10x12x20
294838

I also have ran into some complications with the kore 5th doser. It gave me an odd screen that was all scrambled and filled my sump with ro/di water. Here is the screen I got.
294839
Luckily I caught it before it did to much damage. I disconnected the kore 5th and am just going to let the water evaporate back down to where it should be which will be about 7 gallons or so. I put a tunze osmolator on it and am sending the kore 5th back. I realize that this is one of the top of the line dosers but after only 2 days of having it hooked up and running and having this happen I don't trust it. I also did not like the fact that in order to do anything with it I had to get on my pc and connect via Bluetooth. I like the tunze ato better anyway since I've had one on my other tank for a while and I am now in the market and looking for a good stand alone doser that does not operate only by a pc (ex. Bubble Magnus or the ghl stand alone doser). Another one I have thought about going with is the Kamoer doser. It is supposed to be more accurate than the bm but it works in the same fashion. Are there any thoughts or suggestions for a dosing pump?
Here again are just some updated photos. Hope you enjoy.

Today the ammonia dropped to 0ppm, nitrites went up to 2ppm instead of down as I was expecting and nitrates are at 40ppm. I will wait another 2 days(give or take) to wait for the nitrites to fall below 1ppm then add another dose of ammonia chloride.

Here is a pic of my current tank. 90 gal tank, 35 gal sump, Reef Octopus NWB 150 skimmer, Sicce 2.0 return pump, next reef mr1 shorty reactors for carbon and gfo, and last but not least the ATI Powermodule 8x54w t5 3x75w led. Running 5 blue plus, 2 coral plus and 1 actinic.

I haven't posted on here for a while since I don't believe I really had any followers and not to many that really seemed interested but I'll update anyway. As before I filled my tank on October 11th. I then decided to go full zeovit 3/4 of they way through the cycle. I got the reactor and additives for zeovit. After the cycle my no3 was around 100pmm and po4 .07. I then fired up the zeovit reactor with the recommended amount of zeolites (2L). A few weeks later my no3 was at 10 and po4 .04. I decided to go ahead and add all corals which consisted of 32 sps corals and 4 lps corals on January 19, roughly 3 months after first adding water. I'm not posting everything I've done it this would be 5 pages long. So far I am absolutely in love with zeovit and other than cost don't know why more people don't run this style of system. Please feel free to ask me any questions. Today is day 39 of putting the corals in my tank.
