Hi RC,
I'm back after 2 years out due to personal problems. I had a 54 gallon corner tank that I sadly broke. I tried to "fix" a leaking pipe going to the sump. I tightened too hard and cracked the bottom glass. That was an interesting and flooded night with 54g of saltwater and another 54g of tears ;((

Dispite the broken tank and heart, I really learned a lot working with it and I think I had pretty successful display tank.
This was my 54g corner tank when I started it in January 2010:
<a href="http://s1014.photobucket.com/user/omie11/media/Pecera/new20tank.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/Pecera/new20tank.jpg" border="0" alt="new tank photo new20tank.jpg"/></a>

This was before it broke in 2012:
<a href="http://s1014.photobucket.com/user/omie11/media/Pecera/c44c7234.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/Pecera/c44c7234.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo c44c7234.jpg"/></a>

I also have 2 youtube videos. The first one is details about my tank and the second is lightning, progress, and growth.
First:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBtjbjILptE
Second:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB2sIM20sXc

Anyway, I was desperate because I didn't want my corals and fish to die, I bought a cube tank. It is a 24x24x24 60g tank. The tank looks pretty good and I hope it will do even better than my old one.

Cleaning my equipment; I was thinking in how I was going to set up the aquascape and what type of live stock would be the best. Loving so much the SPS, I decided to go SPS dominant. Having the appropriate equipment for them, I made up my mind and I start my new project.

These are some pics of my equipment:

Let start the assembling!
With help from my girlfriend, I put the tank in place and started beginning my project. I save around 30-35g of my old water and I mix the rest with the Red Sea pro salt. That way I can accelerate the process of recirculation. At this time I was using the marineland pro light fixture.
After I finish my aqua scape and add the water, this is how my tank looked:
<a href="http://s1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/?action=view&current=IMG_1466.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/IMG_1466.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>

Problems, problems and more problems!!!
Working with the sump and installing all the PVC pipes I started the recirculation process. I placed my skimmer and turned it on... Nothing happened!!! I tried again and... NOTHING HAPPENED!!! So, I disassemble the pump and check that everything was fine. Pin wheel was fine (not broken or cracked). I cleaned it for 24 hr in a bucket with water and vinegar. Next day I tried to turn it on.... Again nothing! I call for warranty and they said that will send me a new pump. This is the worst part! Waiting... Like everybody, when I start something I don't want to wait. But didn't have any other option.

Now, working with the ATO I installed and turn it on. Guess what happened... NOTHING!!! I started getting frustrated and anxious. I suspected that the problem was the pump, so I decide to buy a new pump. Thank God it is not that expensive.

Meanwhile, I was waiting so I made an egg create stand for the skimmer, so it can be 6" in the water for a better skim. Finally after 4 days waiting (feels like a year) I received my new bubble blaster pump and my new ATO pump. I check the ATO pump and I was correct, it was the pump. One less problem. Then I connected the BB pump and... It turned on!!! I left it running in fresh water for few hours and then connected everything to the body and put in in the sump.

This is how it started looking after few hours:

My sump is complete and so far doing good. I clean all the reactors and put new media in all of them. That way I won't have to deal with to much GHA.

This is my sump with the reactors and reserve of water for my ATO.
<a href="http://s1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/?action=view&current=20208E00-94C2-4B85-B1E4-C8C91DF99BAE.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/20208E00-94C2-4B85-B1E4-C8C91DF99BAE.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos" /></a>

These are my reactors. The first one is the GFO, continued by carbon, and last but not least the denitrator .

Was to be expected... GHA show up to the party!!!
My parameters are pretty good but I was waiting for the GHA to show. It's bad and getting worse. It's up to 2 inches long and covering all my rocks. I move some corals because it starts suffocating them. Hope this part passes by fast, because it's affecting my corals. The good part is that my Starry Blenny and my snails have enough food for years to come.

Finally!!! My GHA is going away. It took me 2 months, doing a w/c every week for it to go away. Wasn't that difficult but it was very annoying just looking at an ugly tank. I still have some but not to the point to suffocate the corals. Here are some pics of the progress of my cube tank.

Like I posted before, this is my new radion g3 pro. I switched my marineland pro light, that includes one mh and t5's, for the LED's. I know a lot of people have been successful growing SPS and I wanted to give it a try. So far all my SPS are doing good (I have like 21 acros), and the colors are like I expected. The shimmering on the rocks and sand makes the tank so real and enjoyable to watch. Don't regret changing nor the money spent.
This is how it looks from the top:

Thanks BioCubeGuy,
I'm trying to learn how to take out the blue of the pic so it will look more natural. They explained to me, but I though they were talking to me in Chinese! Lol
I need to buy some cover lenses and work with the withe balance... Lets see, maybe in a few weeks it will start looking different. If not I will take some photo classes!

Is it a setting within your camera or lens? Or do you use some type of photo shop etc.. to remove the blue? I've always been fascinated with photography and "getting the right shot" or picture... I assume there is so much to learn about angles, colors, focus etc.. etc...

By what I understand, you can adjust the white balance so that way you can get rid of the blue color. I don't know how to use photoshop, but I want to play first with my camera than the pics .
It's a forum of photography. I have been looking around and this people know how to work with pics! And the good thing is that they will help us to improve.
Lot to learn but in the long way will be worth it.

Here's a weird question out of the blue. Your American DJ Rack Mount. Do the buttons light when powered?

Yes. The light will be off if you turn it off.
Will look like this:

its called white balance.

yo should try and set the white balance to daylight or strobe.

if they allow custom white balancing then you can put a piece of white paper ovr your camera. set the lens to manual focus.

put your camera on full auto.

aim the lens at the lights.

snap a pic

then reset the lens to auto focus and put the camera on whatever setting you want.

then in the menu go to custom white balance and select that pic (it will probably be a light blue to purple.

then shoot away =)

its basically called color subtraction with white balance =P

stupid, generic question. I haven't started a tank yet but am planning to in the next month or so. When I purchase coral from the store, how do I get it off of the ceramic plug or tiny piece of rock and onto the rock in my tank? or do you just have to leave it on the plug and add that somehow to your aquascape?

All depends on the coral. If the coral is fully encrusted leave it and glue the plug. That way the coral won't be cut and be stress. If the coral is not encrusted, I will take it out of the plug and glue it directly to the LR. This is my own opinion. People may do it differently.

Lol Yea, I just brighten the lights in my tank for now. There are tutorials and things for the camera but I cannot get it figured out for great tank pictures. Or get it to look as clear as it does when I just whiten my Radions. I only have one lens; the 18-135mm.

WOW. You are getting some amazing things for what seems to be awesome prices. I honestly don't know whats what or what anything costs. I'm probably one of the guys that fish stores love because they can tell me I'm getting a deal and I'd believe it not knowing any better.

I hope to get some beautiful and colorful stuff for my tank soon!! I just got it setup a few days ago finally..and I need to read more, learn more, and make sure everything is running smoothly and consistently before I add any more fish. I have no coral. Just the four fish that were transferred from our old tank which was dirtier than the dead sea or a swamp.

The best way to find out good prices is to look around different stores and compare. I live in central Florida and I have like 5 nice stores that I go to. Also, another way to know about good prices. This will be your best tool, RC. I learned everything I know on here and asking at my local reef store.
My advice is (it will be so hard to do) to be patient with your tank and make sure your parameters are right before you start adding corals and fish.
If you live by Orlando area, pls let me know, and I will by more than happy to show you some stores, prices, and help. And when you get your tank ready, I can give you some frags.

thanks for the offer, I live in texas, quite a distance. I was re-reading your thread...why is it that you put the skimmer higher in the water(the 6 inches)?

I'm getting lots of algae growth on the rocks I have..My filter sock is completely orange/dark looking now. My cad lights pls150 skimmer is working, no real gunk yet...not sure if its cause tank is about 1.5 weeks working or if the filter sock does most of the work...I've got some dark or yellow water in the skim cup from where it went slightly above the inner circle tube....

I'm also playing with my xr30w pro gen III light, which you have. What maximum power do you use? I want to make sure I don't use too much power or have on too long. My fish were used to the tube lights which are dimmer but everything else was brand new.

So far I'm just maintaining water height in the sump, keeping ph at 8 and my salinity at proper level. I'm also trying to find best placement for the two mp40's to minimize sand dune creations.

All skimmers have specific depth for the best skim. Mines said that it works better at 6inches from water.
About the algae on your rocks, is to be expected. Is a process that will be frustrating and annoying. I'll recommend to buy reactors, that way you will accelerate the process. I have 3 reactors. One for phosphates, one for carbon, and one for nitrates. You will spend some $$$ but this will be very helpful in making sure the water you are using is reading 0.0 tds. That way you will prevent increasing phosphate to your tank.
Check for the "main" parameters if you are starting your tank: salinity, nitrite, nitrates, and phosphates (I think there is one more, but can't remember now). Ca, alkalinity, magnesium, ph... you can worry about later, but you will have it when you do water changes.
Dont worry about your skimmer. If its accumulating junk, then it is working. And the sock is trapping the "dirt".
With your Radions, start with a low %. I started mines at 25% and continued increasing till 45%. That was to strong for my corals and dropped to 35%. It's 16" from the water. They are doing fine, but be careful, bc its strong and can kill your corals. I love them and so far it is doing its job. It has an option that can acclimate your corals before you get to your regular percentage.
If you have a long tank I will recommend to put the power heads at each end of the tank. Just avoid the air suction. Mine is a square 24x24x24, so I have both at the back of the tank. Also, the rocks will help you with the sand dune.
I want to make a point, all I said is my own opinion and what I have experienced with my tank. Hopefully this will help you and I would like to see (or if you have it already) a thread of your tank. Pls, keep me posted.

Thanks for the help. Now I understand on the cad lights skimmer page what it meant on the skimmer height. I thought it was talking about the height of the water in the sump...not that height of the skimmer nozzle. Thanks for that.

Thats a lot of reactors! I only have room for the cad lights media reactor which i haven't installed yet. my tank is a 24 x 24 x 23 50 gallons cube too. I do need to add more rocks, that sounds like it will help with the flow.

Since the strawberry shortcake came out I loved it. I bought the first one like 3-4 years ago. I had at that time a 150w mh. Well, I burn the coral in like a week. I spend some more $$$ and I get another one. I put it in the middle of the tank. What a fantastic coral. Very happy and her polyp extensions were long. I went on vacation and I don't know how the coral fell on the sand. When I return from my vacations the coral didn't survive. I thought, even though I love the coral, that wasn't for me.
When I set up the new tank all I have in my mind was having back the strawberry shortcake acro. After a year of the system running I decided to buy one. She is doing good and growing pretty fast. I will have pics soon (my camera lense can't get a good pic).
Now, I have a special coral. I spend the money, bc it was so hard to let it go. I never seen it before and I hope you guys like it.
It's call the Ultra Strawberry Shortcake...

How do you feed all the coral? Whats your routine?

Some sps lost the color due to low nutrients, so I started feeding 3 times per day. After a week I thought I was feeding a lot and I decided to cut the feeding to twice a day.

I'm feeding pellets for the fish during the day and at night I use oyster fest or coral vibrance.

Check out my other thread, I posted some pics of the progress.

Are you spot feeding with a turkey baster (each separate coral)? I bought a turkey baster thing to feed my electric red mollusk but it doesn't work good. I don't even know if I'm feeding him correctly or enough

Or do you just sort of dump the coral vibrance and let the powerheads carry it around?

I had no idea coral was supposed to fed so often.

Our tank is at point now where we are going to be adding some fish soon. I might be locating a yellow tang tomorrow. My daughters bday is today and want to get her a new fish. More than likely in February I want to add some coral for more movement and color. We are getting coralline algae growth on rocks! Very exciting to see.

Hi Champion6sigma and happy bday to your daughter :celeb3:

When my sps were loosing color I started to feed them 3 times per day. I did it for like a week, but I though was too much. I cut it to twice per day. I feed pellets during the day and at night oyster fest or coral vibrance.

I only do target feeding to my plate coral, but to the rest of the tank, I just pour the food in to the tank. I turn off the main pump and then let it flow for 10mins.

wow i had no idea they eat so much. Thanks for the bday wishes. Turned out to be a great party....had about 50 family and friends attending. And a pink cowboy boot pinata. Was a sheriff callie theme (a tv show)

Can you upload a pic of the device you use to spot feed?

I have a bottle called chromaplex made by kent marine which i use to feed our red flame scallop. I'm still unsure how much and how often to feed it. Plus its hard to spot feed, my tool doesn't work good. Then I have some photoplex i got years ago...i guess its for coral. made by same company. Not sure if it goes bad....

I'm looking forward to adding coral very soon. Still concerned with not managing properly or not adding enough of the other minerals/elements needed.

Many companies make a two part supplement system....

I've got more researching to do. I have not test kits of any kind.

I arrive at my house finding my favorite fish dead. I don't know what could happen to him. I'll miss him a lot! He really had a great personality.

It's true, they are like pets...
I told the story at my LFS and when I mention that one of the eye was swollen, they told me that an infection may kill it.

Well, I order another one. I hope he will bring some fun to the tank!

Hey I got myself a frag rack for the tank! And two starter polyps. A pink zipper and a cornbread rockstar.

I'm hoping to take pics soon. I've got reef roids food for coral.

Omie, I'll be heading over to Orlando for my daughter's swim meet next weekend. Can you recommend a few fish stores worth visiting. I've been to WWC, but interested in visiting a few others while in town. You have a great tank & pics by the way. I've been following along. Thank you.

I like to go to Reefer's Direct in St. Cloud. The people there are awesome and you always found good deals. It's my prefer store and it is close to my house. The other one is Sea in the City. I think it's located in Orlando. Was one in Alafaya Trl. that the name was Aquaria Studio, but I think they change names and owners. Other is Top Shelf Aquatics, in Orlando. That one is close to Sea in the City.
Hope this ones will be close to you!

Awesome. I made a list. Now I'll get on Google Maps & figure out an attack plan to hit all the stores in a day. The only bad thing is my cube is bone dry at the moment,so I can only browse. At least I'll know where to go when I'm ready for livestock. I don't live too far from Orlando. Thanks again for the info!!!

I'm back, but with lots of bad news!

The past month has been hell for my tank and myself! The colors were doing good and then they started turning brown. The PE decreased and the growth became slower. All my parameters were stable and consistent.

My yellow tang started to have something like seizures. I thought it died, but after 15mins he started to swim again. Few days later my cleaner shrimp disappeared. I had it for a long time and didn't have any problems at all. Then my favorite fish, the starry blenny, died. He was so healthy and happy! When I found him he was swollen and one of his eyes had popped out. Around the same week my fire shrimp disappeared too. I was so upset and frustrated bc I wasn't doing drastic changes to the tank and I normally don't put stress on my fish.

One day, trying to find out the problem of my crash, I found that the ph dropped to 7.4 from 7.9 (my normal ph). I opened the windows and did all I could for the tank to get back the O2 needed. It went up to 8!!! Weird!!! I closed the windows and in less than a hour the ph dropped drastically to 7.6.

The next day, I went to my LFS and bought the Zeovit balance, a ph buffer. I started dosing my tank and at the same time figuring out the problem. I blame not having enough O2 bc it is cold and the a/c was turned off and the house is lacking air movement. Every time I was off work I opened the windows to bring the ph up as much as I could. I was dosing the tank A LOT anyways to keep the ph in control. It was strange because years before I never had this situation, but I couldn't found the problem behind all this.

One day I was off from work, and I was having my breakfast. While I was eating I was looking at the tank and saw my clownfish not swimming normally. I grabbed a stick that I made and move him around and he started to swim normally again. Not even 1 min and he did the same thing. I move him again and everything went back to "normal" until the female started to do the same thing!!! Ooohhh sh&$!! My yellow tang started to swim really fast with seizures. My blue tang was doing the same thing and my clowns swimming slow.

Not knowing what to do I started to move my fish side to side and then I smell something burning. My first thought was the thermostat. I tried to turn it off from my surge protector and it wasn't responding. I unplugged it and this is what I found...

<a href="http://s1014.photobucket.com/user/omie11/media/reef%20central/F3EFD45B-B352-4CEB-AF92-35BD9B2003E2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af269/omie11/reef%20central/F3EFD45B-B352-4CEB-AF92-35BD9B2003E2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo F3EFD45B-B352-4CEB-AF92-35BD9B2003E2.jpg"/></a>

My thermostat exploded and it was electrocuting my fish. After I removed the broken glass and the residual of the thermostat from the tank the clowns started to swim better, but my 2 tangs were laying on the sand breathing heavily. I did a water change right away and spent over two hrs trying to make my tangs swim again.

I went to the store and bought an expensive thermostat that doesn't break and went back to the house and did another water change. 7hrs after the incident, the tangs were swimming. All corals were fine, but some of them started to turn white bc of stress with the w/c. The next day my yellow tang died. He looked almost the same way as my starry Blenny. It's frustrating, but it could be worse.

Right now I'm on vacation, hoping that the tank is stable. My mother-in-law is taking care of it and so far so good! My ph stays over 8 and the fish are happy.

***I need some answers!!!***
A broken/cracked thermostat that is transporting electricity in to the tank can decrease the ph of the water??? After I removed it, my ph has been over 8 and I'm not dosing anything at all, (as far as balance).

Just read the news> sorry to hear that man. That sucks about the heater. The fish.

be careful with the buffer. I found out the hard way i was killing my fish and coral by using that. By increasing ph with a buffer it spikes the alkalinity to killer levels. on my threads the people there told me not to use it. Water changes are my best friend.

As far as heater, I use the titanium finnex i believe. They just made an even better one with guards all around the titanium to protect from stuff laying on it...

The titanium is a champ.

I dont know much about electricity or engineering or chem to help with your other questions....just my own experience with the ph buffer, which i thought was safe. and it never kept my ph level at the higher levels after dosing because all my other parameters were off. sk8ter and others told me to balance out other variables and that ph would follow eventually....but not to worry about mine. Mines in the 7's now.

I did what you did, used the ph buffer a lot. My alk is still high after doing almost a full tank of water changes over the course of a few weeks after losing my two clowns.

Hi Champion6sigma,

Yeah man, it sucks, but I'm glad that it's doing well again. About the buffer, they have 2 different ones. My LFS told me that the one called balance by Zeovit won't raise the alk. But It did raise it. I don't think it was a lot, but it did. I put over a bottle in a week and from my steady 8 dKh it went up to 11dKh. I was testing constantly, making sure that none of the parameters would spike and make things worse. I had a lot of problems in a small period of time and the best way to prevent more damage was by testing.

To make sure that nothing would go wrong, with me being out on vacation, I bought the Cobalt Neo-Therm 200w heater. Supposedly it doesn't break and I hope so, bc it was very expensive! I added a ground to the water, that way if electricity gets in the water it will shut down everything. The ground only cost me like $12. I think it is the best thing you can do for the safety of the fish and yours too.

This weekend I will post some new corals that I bought. I went to Tampa, FL, where they had the Florida Frag Swap. Cool stuff there and nice prices too. Will keep you posted!!!

That's the best thing you can do and it's very cheap! Thank God that I was in my house at that moment. I wouldn't imagine me not been there at that moment. It's really the best $12 you can spend for everybody's safety!

I want to thank you for reading my thread and being part of my journey. In this hobby, we need to expect that good and bad things will happen. Hopefully more good than bad, and learn to avoid the bad ones. Sometimes I find out things the hard way, but others I learned reading threads on here and listening to advice from our fellows reefers.

I'm glad that I helped you with names. I love when people do the same thing, bc it is easier to look for them in a LFS. I'll keep posting more. I'm on vacation, but I left some corals acclimating and as soon I get home I'll post more.

I am not sure if this answers your question but have electricity in your saltwater does change the chemistry: basically most ion can be electrolyzed and water will be converted into H2 and O2. If you look at the wires that were exposed in your saltwater you should be able to see some thick residuals covering the metal wire.

Sorry for your loss. I switched to all metal heaters a while ago and will never go back to glass. Metal heaters are not perfect but they have less chance to explode ad electrocute the fish.

I have the same tank i think. I just took out all my sand and replaced it and took any sand i had out of the refug. All i have down there is chaeto and live rock now. I redid my rock a bit too. This is basically how it looks now https://flic.kr/p/K5AQBD
Been having a crazy nitrate problem but i think i finally figured it out.

Good that you figure out your nitrates. I love my cube tank, and I'm thinking on buying the 31g cube for anemones... Hopefully soon :bounce2::bounce3:

I always wanted to have a refugium, but I don't have the space for it. I started reading about algae scruber and find out about He HOG1 / HOG1x.
Any thoughts / suggestions / experiences?

Great pics, I hadn't been on reefcentral much, you've always got great coral to show off!

^white balance settings. Easy. You can also modify them in post processing software like Lightroom. Canon cameras have a white balance selector in settings. You can't use it in "auto mode." However, even if you do shoot in auto, you can change the white balance in Lightroom or other software. I'd suggest shooting in RAW too. It makes editing easier.

Your setup looks great by the way!

I know! It's being a while, but glad that you are back!!!
Lots of the corals were bought on a sale at WWC. Literally I paid $6 per frag!

After a difficult move (I bought a new house) and having my tank 2 month neglected, some of the corals still glowing!
