I have a new way. Since I'm re-scaping, when removing the live rock, I shine a small LED black light on the rocks, and touch them with a butane torch. Very effective, but smelly. Does the trick. However you never get them all, must repeat.

Make sure you are not burning any palys which can release dangerous toxins (as in DEADLY).

It is NEVER a good idea to burn, boil, or heat anything that comes from the ocean. Zoas burning can kill, many forms of algae are toxic, bacteria in aerosol form can also be harmful.

Thanks for the advice. This technique was recommended by a professional reef maintenance company. I've done this probably 5 times with no ill effect. No palys in sight, well aware of the danger. Thanks

This works well if they are exposed-a little slug of holdfast slapped over them -wait a week pop the holdfast off no mo mojo

This isn't really a new technique. I don't like it but its been around a while.

Yes, few things are new, I've been in the hobby since '91 and its something I must of missed. We must of had 75+, its a big tank. Certainly the fastest way to put a dent in them.

I would rather use the wand if it was that bad. Do you rinse the rock off afterwards with all the ancillary residue created?

Had a few in my tank when i first started it and had no idea what they were and we thought they were some type of polyp coral. A few hundred majanos later decided to get rid of them all.

Removed the rocks little by little and placed them in a separate 5 gallon bucket and then mixed pickling lime and some r/o water and made a thick paste and just covered them in it. It melted them right off the rocks. Rinsed the rocks real good and then returned them to the display tank and it's been majano free since then.

They can get bad. I have a few left and I'm going to keep up as best I can. Yes, I do rinse the rock after I burn. My reef has become a project again. I've been away, but now I'm back. Something a Romulan once said in passing.

Use lemon juice in the same fashion works just as well and no smell
