Hello everyone,

I usually like to bring new inhabitants into the system following a 3-4 week Quarantine process, which starts over if i find I have to treat the fish with any type of medicine. Once the medicine period is over, i start those 3-4 weeks again.

I am planning to get a Dwarf Angelfish in the next week. I was thinking either a Flame Angel, Coral Beauty, or some other type. I find that the LFS I trust usually has Flame Angels available.

I was wondering, since I heard that Angelfish are commonly collected with the use of Cyanide and other things to make collection easier, if I need to take any extra precautions with the quarantine of this fish. I will be running carbon since I do not treat for anything I have not seen on a fish. I assume the carbon will be enough to remove some harmful elements that might leach out from the fish but what else should I be looking for in terms of behavior?

When I quarantined my clownfish, I read up on their behavior so when I observed them I could understand if something was wrong, but I have not seen much information about the behaviors of Dwarf Angels. If anything is particular to this type of fish, I would appreciate your help in advising me to look for these signs.

Thanks,
Ken

My flame angel loves to dart in and out of my caves and overhangs so you wanna make sure you have multiple large pieces of PVC he can easily fit into. You should be able to tell if a fish is healthy dwarf angels are very boisterous and a sick one will be very lethargic. Just give it multiple hiding places and it will be fine.

Thanks for the advice. I am prepping all my gear now for the process, and I like to start fresh each time with new PVC. I am going to be picking up a bunch of PVC ends after work and using some aquarium glue to make it into a structure that allows the dwarf angel to have something to swim around in but also still allow me to see it most of the time, I have a webcam I have on a mini display at work so I can get to see it or my DT all day while I work.

Thanks for the advice.

EDIT: At the store, I ask them to show me the fish eating, but what else should I look for to ensure it is not lethargic. The holding tanks are not that big for the new arrivals.

I re use my pvc and I use 3 inch pipe fittings. Mostly tee's and 45's. After each treatment I do give them a good bleaching.

I don't have the space to do a proper bleaching. I replace everything I can between QT's though. This is the last fish I expect to bring into my tank, so it's not a big deal. I also never had this large a fish in Quarantine, so I wanted more PVC than I had in the past.

(by "this large" i mean that this is an active fish that will need a lot of space when in the DT, so I want to make it at most at home while it's in QT as I can.

I'm also looking to pick up a flame angel soon. Is 10 gal big enough for a quarantine? I've got 1" pvc in there right now for a dottyback. Might need something a little bigger for the angel.

I am planning to use a 10G tank for Quarantine.

Probably not recommended, but that's what I go the space for. Really, a 29G would be best, but because these fish will only be spending a month or two in the QT, we can get away with the small size. I am planning to wait until I can get ahold of as small a dwarf angel as possible. While it will definitely grow, I absolutely need it to be small to give it the best chance of surviving the transition to the QT and then to the DT without feeling too confined.
