View Full Version : MaxCap 90GPD Issues

I am running a MaxCap90GPD system with two Tested 99 Percent Rejection SpectraSelect Plus™ 90-GPD RO Membranes and a 180-GPD Preset Flow Restrictor plus a Booster Pump. It runs at about 65PSI and makes approximately 200 gallons a month RO/DI Water. My DI Cartridges are 2 months old and TDS Readings today are:
Left In - 192
Left Out - 001
Right In - 004
Right Out - 036

Obviously I am running through DI Cartridges like crazy and it is getting ridiculously expensive. One membrane is about 2 months old and the other is about 1 year old. I flush them at least once a month for a couple minutes. When I replace the High Capacity MaxCap and Silica Buster Cartridges I get Right In - 002 and Right Out 000. How can I save a bit on the expenses here and what DI Cartridges should I be running in this situation? The system automatically fills a 55 gallon drum and once full shuts off via an ASO. The 55 gallon drum fills my Reef Aquarium via a UPLC II or I pump it out to fill another drum for making up water changes. Right now I am looking at about $76.60 for DI Cartridges plus shipping every 6 to 8 weeks. What would you recommend in this situation?

Thanks,
David

Here is the 2013 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report from the local water company. Maybe this will provide some information.

Hello,

Hello my name is Jeremy.

I am sorry that you are experiencing frustration. I will be here to assist you with any issues that you are having. In order to help you in the most efficient way I will need some questions answered.

What system model do you have?

What is your input pressure to the system?

To measure the ml/pm use a stop-watch and a measuring cup.

How many milliliters per minute is the good product water flowing?

How many milliliters per minute is the bad waste water flowing?

Do you know the Alkalinity and PH of your source water?

Does your water have any CO2?

Are you on municipal water or well water?

Do you have a water quality report?

Please let me know the answers to these questions, and I will be able to help you out. Also using the mechanical float is a DI killer. Making large batches of water at once is the most efficient. We have a product called a LLC-SVC-2FLT-4-10. This will set a high limit, and also a low limit. This will automate your water production.

Jeremy, here is how my system is currently set up. It is a MaxCap 90 GPD RO/DI that has a Piggy Back Membrane and 180 GPD Preset Flow Restrictor:
Tap Water Feed
* First 0.5Micron Sediment Filter -(SF-MT-0.5-10)
* Second 0.5Micron Sediment Filter -(SF-MT-0.5-10)
* 0.5Micron Carbon Block Filter -(CF-0.5-10)
* 1Micron ChlorPlus Chloramine Removal Carbon Block Filter -(CF-CR-1-10)
* Left TDS Meter IN
* Booster Pump
* Membrane #1 - 99 Percent Rejection SpectraSelect Plus™ 90-GPD RO Membrane OUT = Top to Membrane #2 Input, Bottom to ASO IN (NOT Marked )
* Membrane #2 - 99 Percent Rejection SpectraSelect Plus™ 90-GPD RO Membrane OUT = Top to ASO IN Marked, Bottom to ASO IN (NOT Marked)
* ASO - (Marked OUT) to Flow Restrictor (FR-180-GRN), (NOT Marked OUT) to LEFT TDS Meter OUT then to DI Cartridge
* MAXCAP Super DI -(DI-MC-10HC) To Right TDS Meter IN then to Silica Buster DI Cartridge
* Silica Buster DI (DI-SB-10HC) to Right TDS Meter OUT then to Water Reservoir

To answer your questions:

What system model do you have? SpectraPure MaxCap 90 GPD

What is your input pressure to the system? 35PSI to system and 65PSI After Booster Pump

To measure the ml/pm use a stop-watch and a measuring cup.

How many milliliters per minute is the good product water flowing? 550 milliliters per minute

How many milliliters per minute is the bad waste water flowing? 900 milliliters per minute

Do you know the Alkalinity and PH of your source water? Alkalinity= 2.64 meg/L or 7.4 dkH
pH = 8.01

Does your water have any CO2? UNKNOWN No test available

Are you on municipal water or well water? Privately owned municipal water company

Do you have a water quality report? YES http://http://dwsd.us/PDF/AWQR/2013.Annual.Drinking.Water.Quality.Report.pdf

I ran the system for 30 minutes this morning to see what my TDS Readings would be. After 30 minutes continuous run here are the current TDS Readings:
LEFT TDS Meter IN - 194 OUT - 001
RIGHT TDS Meter IN - 002 OUT - 004

By the way, your website is having difficulties. Every time I am on the site lately it is so slow it takes several minutes to go from one page to another.

Jeremy,

I see that the last link I posted didn't work. I emailed you a copy of the report and here is also a link that works...

Jeremy,

This is the only report I have available. I have not ordered a Water Analysis and wouldn't really know what to get or what lab is reliable. From the rest of the information I provided, what do you think?

Both of the DI needs to be replaced, but you also need to increase your waste water by shortening your flow restrictor. 990ML of waste is not enough. It needs to be at least 1500-1600 ml per minute. This will increase the life of your DI.

Did this work for you? If so, how di you now how much to shorten the restrictor

Thanks.

Locate the skinny flow restrictor and carefully slice an inch off the end with a sharp razor blade.
Re-install and re-measure the two flow rates.
If there's still not enough waste water, repeat until there is.
