need a new protein skimmer for my 150 gallon dual overflow tank with a 55 gallon sump.

My reef octopus 2000 sss pump died and I need a skimmer asap. I made a fairly large chamber for the protein skimmer but would still prefer one with a footprint on the smaller side.

I'd prefer to spend less the $500. What do you recommend.

SRO-2000 int. if you have the room. Much easier to service an external pump, also external pumps make better use of the skimmer body and may result in better skimming in some cases. SRO3000 is probably a better choice(it moves more water which may be better for your system volume). Also, the JNS SK3. Long as they fit, they would be the best performing, highest quality skimmer you could get for under $500.

I used to own a pair of SRO 2000's. Many problems with pump, and overflowing. I purchased AquaMaxx's EM series to replace them, an EM200 & 300 on a 90g and 150g respectively. The SRO's can not compare to the AquaMaxx's in terms of performance and reliability. I like the pump in the body, as it utilizes space in the skimmer, and saves sump space. They are always backordered, and for good reason. In fact, most all of AquaMaxx's line are always out of stock. Too bad for most.

A little known gem that is a lot of bang for the buck is the Bubble-Magus Hero 180 Protein Skimmer at Pet Mountain. $319. Take a peak at it HERE (http://www.petmountain.com/product/aquarium-skimmers/11442-573345/bubble-magus-bubble-magus-hero-180-protein-skimmer.html#).

You can get the 24" life reef for $469 including the pump.
Probably the last skimmer you'll every buy (unless you get a much bigger tank).

How about just a replacement pump? Looks like the Bubble Blaster HY2000S will be about $220 +/- depending on where you get it from.

Either an Aquamaxx EM300 or 500 or a new bubble blaster pump is how I'd go.

yall Gotta move aquamaxx from recommend list... Something back ordered for two months ain't gonna meet asap criteria.

I appreciate the advice!

I reached out to coralvue and I am sending my pump out to be looked at. They said if its repairable they will fix it If not they will replace it.

I guess my tank will have no skimmer for a couple of week ;-/

A couple of weeks is a long time without skimming. Can you get some filter feeders in there? Sponges do miracles!

Just increase water changes a bit. Maybe feed a bit less. A couple of weeks is not a big deal. Plenty of skimmerless tanks out there.
