My research shows that the general specific gravity of the ocean is more or less 1.025. Why do so many people seem to opt for 1.026 in their reef tanks? I'm sure there could be many different reasons but can anyone explain this and at what number do you keep your tank?

We actually have a large range that coral/fish can adapt to. For instance, a lot of stores keep their salinites around 1.021 and below. The biggest concern is keeping the salinity constant at whatever you choose. I think a lot of people keep it a little higher because they believe that it helps with keeping ich away (it doesn't) but its not really harmful. I keep mine at 1.025 since my refractometer is easy to read at that exact measurement then guessing on a smaller, tiny tick mark.

Where you get that number? The canonical number is 1.0264. That's what you normally see.

You sure you didn't mix up density and specific gravity?
