I started by using kalkwasser, I preferred Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime, in my top off water. Once that was no longer sufficient to keep up with my demand, I started to add Calcium Chloride and Soda Ash from BRS. I've also used simple A&H baking soda that I baked for 1 1/2 hrs @ 400 degrees. With regular WC's I've never had to dose Mg.

I used to use BRS 2 part. Now I use ESV Bionic its more convenient.

I make my own with baking soda and calcium chloride that I buy bulk from BRS. Way cheaper that way.

Kent Marine Tech-CB.
I'll probably get the BRS system next time there's a sale.
It would be nice to have it automated.

ESV has been my staple so can't say much about others. I did do BRS make your own in the beginning, just to lazy now with all the other reef chores there are. For higher demand, I recommend dosers and weekly testing/tweaking.

BRS bulk. Ca and Alk by dosing pump, mag dosed manually usually every 10-14 days as needed. Not sure why my mag consumption is low.

I had been using ESV Bionic 2 part since the beginning but recently switched to 3 part DIY; soda ash, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride/magnesium sulfate mix. All on dosing pumps. Switch was done for cost savings. More work with the bulk and need to take safety precautions handling the chemicals. I also use kalk in ato.

Stuff in your system? Before you dose you should measure your alk, calcium and magnesium levels. They may be in acceptable ranges and you don't need to dose

Start out by manually dosing using a bottled 2 part solution. ..or BRS bulk mixes work great too. You get a lot more for your money with BRS. Doing it manually teaches you what the changes in levels are and what dose is needed to maintain the level you want. Then employ a dosing pump and buy space saver bottles to store the 2 part in. Set the doser according to your tank demands....and then just sit back and relax. Each one gallon jug of ca/dkh solution will last "most" people about a month. Then just mix up a new batch.

Agreed....each week record your alk cal and mag levels and at the end of the month you will get an idea of how much to dose
