You should be able to look in a manual for the ports needed or google it. Might even be easier to put into a dmz. Look under the gaming tab on your router and plug in the IP address and make sure it's static on both ends. May also have to put other devices into a static IP as well. Hope this helps, I'll subscribe to the thread just incasen you need more help. I might be new to salt, but IT/networking is my bread and butter ;)

Okay well its defaulted to port 80. I have tried to set up the port forward to 80 and I still get no remote access I am sure there is a step im missing here somewhere

What type of internet are you running? Do you have access to the modem or is it a shared hub like at an apartment complex?

I am running comcast internet. I live in a house so I have full access to the modem and everything. Haha where do I start?

I would start by getting your router/modem specs and getting a feel for all the little tabs it has to offer. You're looking for one called DMZ, it'll either be under gaming or accessibility. Take the mac address of the rke net module (find it under the net scan feature I think it's called) and plug it into the dmz function. That's a very bare bones explanation, but it'll get you a good start.

On a side note, if your modem is not your router you could be dealing with a "double NAT" problem. Here is a link to how to fix that, again it's just a shotgun approach, may need to work a bit of Google magic to get the specifics of your set up.

Any luck or did we just compound and complicate the problem for you?

Well I just looked into it all sorry got really crazy with work, and I think I am dealing with a double nat problem, I have a modem and a router and they are not one in the same. So I will see if I can tackle that one, haha remote access anyone????

Ha ha ha remote access is tough with a double nat... best bet is set your router up in a dmz on your modemand go from there

BNAVITSKY
09/01/2014, 06:55 PM
How do I go about doing that? Haha if I gave you remote access could you help me out?

I don't think it would work simply because remote access is what you're trying to establish with the module. You'll be fine, it's not as hard as it sounds. Get the specs on your modem, and look up how to put devices onto a dmz. Then take your router MAC address or static IP to plug in and that's the first hurdle. Then wash, rinse, repeat with the RKE net module on your router. I believe in teaching men to fish instead of handing them a single fish.

Haha, I can appreciate that. I need to learn to fish then, okay so lets talk this out I have a comcast router that runs to my Netgear router to give me wifi, I need to put the comcast one into DMZ and then I go from there?

Correct, access the settings of the comcast router and put either the MAC address or the IP of the wireless router into the dmz. That gives all data a free pass to your router. Then, using the same concept, repeat on your wireless router with preferably the MAC address of the RKE into the DMZ and you should be golden.

If you can use the MAC address then we don't have to delve into static IP's... that's a whole 'nother animal.

So I cant actually access my comcast router, its an arris tm722 but I cant find anything about DMZ, then i looked into my netgear router into dmz and that isnt in there either.... so where do I go from there or is this just not possible for me? Normally tech stuff is super easy for me this one just has me baffled and I appreciate all the help!

Give me the EXACT specs on both your modem and router and I'll do some digging for you. It's in there... they just hide them sometimes.
Like is it a 722g or 722g/ct or anything like that?

BNAVITSKY
09/01/2014, 07:30 PM
Okay its a 722g/ct I cant seem to figure out how to even pull that open, I can access my router which is a wndr3400v2 (netgear) and the ip for that is 192.168.1.1

Connect your computer directly to the modem via ethernet cable if at all possible, then access it that way.

From what I read here I think I need a static ip, http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WNDR3400v2/Minecraft_Server.htm

okay once I connect, what do I do? I cant seem to find out how to bring it up

Okay, you're on comcast correct? They have a support number that they can access your modem from their end. They have a bit backward setup so it's hard to walk you through a standard set up. I'd get that number and call them and have them do it. I can keep walking you through it if you'd like, but that number is probably gonna be your best bet at this point.

I'd look under general or network on your modem, I couldn't see the side tabs on the router well enough to make heads or tails of them.
EDIT: Never mind lol you have it set up on your modem, if that doesn't work I'd say call comcast gateway support... otherwise I'll have you clicking every tab and button til Armageddon and still only have a marginal chance of success. Sorry to lead you through the brambles and take you back to square 2... not one lol cause you at least know what's going on now
